Within the blink of an eye

I think it was somewhere last week when @yahuzah and I were talking about how sometimes you lose a battle by trying to build your line up around a certain central card. Well, today was when I did that. I remember also telling him this…

Sometimes I even end up going to battle with a completely stupid strategy because I started building my team around a certain card and later realize one particular card without which the team won’t work can’t be used either because of mana or ruleset. By the time I make this realization, I almost ran out of time, so I select whatever team comes to mind in that small seconds space and go to battle with them. This normally happens to me with the BattleMage Secrets Challenge. My mind is always so focused on “You might lose, don’t lose” that I panic and confuse myself on what team to use

I shit you not, this is exactly what happened to me today. I’ll get into the details in the later part of this post, but let’s take a look at the ruleset for this week's challenge first.

RulesetDescription
CounterspellAll monsters have the magic reflect ability

My opponent’s line up

Summoner12345

When I saw the first flash of the battle and I saw my opponent used Thadius Brood as their summoner, I chuckled thinking “Ah man, this person has completely missed me cos I didn’t come with magic”.

Then when the battle screen loaded and I saw his line up, I was excited. "Piece of cake". Boy was I wrong! I believe what gave my opponent the edge was the weapon-training monster they had, which gave adjacent friendly monsters a ranged attack as high as 3 each!

I realized I lost the battle when the weapons training buffs took effect. Anyways, let’s look at my own line up.

My line up and strategy

Summoner123

I chose Conqueror Jacek as my summoner for the piercing ability he’ll grant my monsters. Or should I say, my might warrior, Grum Flumblade. As I said in my first paragraphs, my entire strategy was built around Grum. He was the star and everyone else was just there to help him perform.

I deliberately put him in second position, using Radiated Scorcher as a tank sacrifice so Grum can avoid one avoid. This would’ve worked out fine if I didn’t have 3 range attackers firing at me constantly.

In third position, I put Nimbledook Scout for her backfire ability. I believed that if the 2 extra speed that my summoner gives to all friendly units added up to her speed, she should be able to dodge many attacks, dealing good damage to the attackers. Unfortunately as you see, my opponent buffed his monsters speed too, so that sorta didn’t work.

The Battle

Summoner and monster buffs took effect before the battle began

Round 1

My opponent’s summoner reduced my tank’s health to just one and he was knocked out immediately by their tank. This brought Grum to the front, to face the wrath of 3 backline range attackers with a collective ranged attack power of 9. Grum’s shield was completely ripped apart by the end of round one, and even his health had taken some damage. There was no way I was surviving this battle without any sort of a healer on my team.

Round 2

Somewhere into the middle of this round, Grum was felled and Nimbledook Scout was forced forward. With no attack, I was hoping her high speed of 6 would allow her dodge all attacks, return damage fire back to attackers. But who was I kidding? She’s no Regal Peryton. So as you imagine, I lost the round and battle rather quickly.

😂😂 you were laughing at me only to make the same mistake. We centered our teams on the same summoner and Grum 😅
