BATTLE MAGE SECRETS: QUIX THE DEVIOUS in CLOSE RANGE Ruleset

closerange-quix.png

GM:frens and fellow hiver, as usual in this weekend I am posting an Splinterlands post as my entry in BATTLE MAGE SECRETS. This week topic is about Close Range Ruleset.

Close Range is a ruleset that gives advantage to ranged monster. It makes them able to attack from frontline/main tank position. We can say that this ruleset encourages players to bring out their ranged monsters and some even prefer to set Ranged attackers/Archer as their main tank. This make high health point ranged monsters or ranged monsters with armor get more favorable over melee monsters.

There are two approaches you can use when you get this ruleset:

  1. Trying to exploit the ruleset. You can set some Ranged Monsters, the hard damager, speedy, and high health with some armor. You can set in some monsters who have two kind of attack, such as Drybone Raider and War Chang.
  2. You can try to counter your opponent with assumption he will use some archer / ranged monsters. For example, Using Lir Deepswimmer as your summoner. If you do not have that summoner, you can use some Headwinds ability or using tank with Shield ability.

ok lets check out the battle, shall we?

THE BATTLE

This was a Gold League Modern Format Rank Battle, I was using Blackkrrsantan, a guild account from Bulldog1205 the streamer. The variation was very limited, because we could only play with Death Element or Dragon only. Let see the battle then....

ROUND 1

image.png

  • The battle started with both of us Buffing up our team and debuffing our opponents.
  • My opponent came with 7 Melee Damage, 5 range damage and 3 magic damage. Those all were 15 effective Damage
  • My team had 4 Melee damage and 8 range damage. Combined all became 12 damage per round.
  • This was a battle where both party going out with quite big guns.
  • My Titan Carnage Shut down ther Djin Chwala and that made a huge difference between our team

ROUND 2

image.png

  • Round 2 started with my team winning the number of monster, its 6 vs 5 now.
  • This round turned out to be a dull one none got killed.

ROUND 3

image.png

  • This looked like a restart of round 2 however everyone already got badly injured
  • My team managed to outspeed theirs, killing 3 of their monsters before any of them could make a move.

ROUND 4

image.png

  • I could not see how they could survive in this situation. They got wiped out

This was not a perfect victory, however I was glad my team got the win without anyone died.

CLOSURE AND DISCUSSION

My team looked very dominating in this battle, however I could not say my opponent was bad. He came with a good line up, in fact both of us using a similar approach

  1. Using Quix the Devious... This was important because Quix debuffed opponent -1 range damage, regardless who got debuffed, it did not matter. This indicated both of us believed Quix was the guy to lead our team during Close Range ruleset.
    image.png
  2. Secondary tank with Shield Ability. Both of us used Melee Monster with shield ability, however both had difference function. My secondary thank emphasized more attacking role, Titan carnage delivered damages with his double strike reach attacks. His Harklaw, on the other hand, focused more on defense using his demoralize ability. Both approaches proved very effective and efficient, so I think the battle result was not decided on this positon nor the main tank position.

So how and why the battle turned out ugly for his side, well these are my opinions:

1. SPEED CONTEST

There was one monster in my team, he did not standout at all, he almost died as the first one, however his existence was very decisive that changed the flow of the battle. He was Supply Runner.

image.png

He got debuffed by opponent Quix so he could not deliver many damage, however his Swiftness changed everything. But Lira The Dark had Swiftness too, so what was the difference?

It's true both of us used Lira the Dark too, however the extra +1 speed I got from Supply Runner's Swiftness changed all. You could check my Opponent line up, only their 2 tanks were slow, the same as my line up. So the 4 backline monsters were actually doing the speed contest.

Doesn't matter how fast your monsters are, when you lose 1 speed only, it means you let opponents hit first, kill you first, and its all over. Slow Tanks who already prepare to lose the speed tend to have higher health, defensive ability, or armors... however speedy backline monsters aren't built that way. They will get killed easily, and that's what happened in this game.

2. THE BATTLE OF THE USELESS

image.png

Another funny thing in this battle was both of us had our core monsters being a flop, useless, unable to contribute well in the battle. I had my Drybone Raider hitting 0 all the time unable to hurt Harklaw at all. Its frustating seeing her doing that... Meanwhile opponent Chaos dragon bombarding everywhere however not killing any of my team members, definitely the dragon only wants to have some fireworks party without any intention to kill anyone 😂

Why Drybone Raider Failed

Drybone Raider definitely is a strong one, she can deliver 4 attacks in a round during close range ruleset. There was sole reason why She became a flop, that's because of Quix the Devious + Harklaw combination, a combination of demoralize ability and headwind ability. We can say She gets completely nullified by opponent tactic. This also proves that HARKLAW is not some useless legendary monster, this guy definitely not the strongest, however during certain condition such as two rulesets in this battle, he contributed extraordinarily to his team.

Why Chaos Dragon Failed

I can simply say that Chaos Dragon failed to do anything due to his Level. In Low league, Bronze-Silver league, most of the battle are about basic mechanism. Who has higher health point, who is faster, who delivers higher damage and so on.

Things evolves drastically starting from Gold League. In Gold, its not about basic mechanism, its more about the battle of abilities. Who buff, who debuff better, who get countered by opponent ability, and so on. If only my opponent brought a well leveled Chaos Legion, the one with Blast Ability, the battle would become much more evenly match up. I am not saying my team will lose, however atleast my team won't be dominating the flow of the battle.

That's all folks, have fun playing Splinterlands
