Battle of Big Tanks, Supports Decides The Flows

battle of big tanks.png

Hi everyone, welcome back to my Splinterlands Post. This week I want to talk about a Big Fight, between two team which both uses big tanks. I like to play defensively, so I often play with more than one tank. This time I meet someone who seems to play with the same way with I do.

I am playing that Black-Santan account, it's a Scholarship Account from Bulldog1205, yeah you are right, that famous streamer one. Based on my opponent's account name, it seems to be a scholarship account too. Two Scholars battled each other using the similar approach, this should be interesting.

Anyway this battle is from a Modern Format Gold League. I am very confidence from beginning that this will be an easy win for me, because I see one big difference between us, which we will discuss it later below.

BATTLE PREPARATION

There was not any special ruleset on this battle, that's why I directly went with Dragon Team. I had Quix The Devious in my selection, and he was on my a must have list during this kind of situation

PositionCardAbilityPlan and Strategy
Summoner-1 range an -1 SpeedQuix the Devious is the first Chaos Legion Legendary Summoner. He is one of the best summoner too, because both of his debuffs are working well making your opponents weaker. If you check on https://summonerlab.com/ He is one of the summoner who has very high win rate
Main TankFly, Recharge, HealingUriel The Purifier is the best heavy tank from Chaos Legion Life Element. He has high heath, high armor, healing and good speed with a fly ability to dodge opponent physical attacks. The only weakness he has is his attack type which is a recharge, he will attack once in two turns and this is not a good one during certain condition/rulesets.
SecondReach, Double Strike, ShieldCarnage Titan is one of the strongest Reach Melee monsters. I pick him because his melee damage is very destructive, hopefully he can cover up Uriel weakness in attack frequency. Carnage titan alone is more than enough to be a main tank. So these two are my ultimate double walls here.
ThirdFly, Repair, Resurrect, ImmunityAdelade Brightwing definitely is one of the best support from Chaos Legion edition. The only weakness she has is that she is slow, but it's ok for her being slow, else she will be OP. I will expect alot from her, her repair ability here will be he most crucial one to ensure Uriel and Carnage Titan survival.
FourthStrengthen, TriageMy favorite Djinn, but not because she wears bikini in the battlefield. She is all rounder, has good magic damage, good speed, good health, and most importantly, her abilities!!! Strengthen + triage, I need these especially I have no taunt tank, so there will be some damage sneak into my backline.
FifthTank Heal, DispelMany people have not realized yet that Venari Crystalsmith is one of the core Life Element monsters in Modern Format. She is the only Life element tank healer you can get in modern format that's why she always be my main support monster. It feels bitter if I build up a Life Team without her.
LastBlast, ForcefieldMy third damage dealer and of course our main theme this week. Initially like her a lot better than Pelacor Arbalest due to her armor, however after several battles I recognize she is a lot stronger and dangerous than Pelacor Arbalest

Basically this is one of my winning formation. If you read one of my post below from 2 weeks ago:

I said there that I relied a lot on Uriel + Adelade now. In this battle things are planned similarly but I replace Bila with Carnage Titan here because on Gold League and above, many monsters have status ailment such as affliction and poison, so better I go with more attack powers than trying to make a very thick walls.

THE BATTLE

image.png

Round 1 started by both party buffed their team and debuffed their opponent. In term of speed, both of us are equal. In term of firepower:

  • My opponent had 8 melee damage, 2 range damage, and 6 magic damage. combined all become 16 Damage per turn.
  • My team had 7 Melee Damage, 4 range damage, and 5 magic damage. combined all become 16 damage per turn too.
Somehow our fire power, speed, and defense strategy looked very similar. This would be a very interesting one

image.png

As expected, Round 2 started with zero casualty. My Uriel seemed to be badly injured, meanwhile on their side were on a better condition. This looked to be a long battle, which both party would heavily relied on their both front tanks.

image.png

Things suddently changed 180 degree when my Uriel recharged blow landed and killed their Agor Longtail instantly. I agreed if recharge was no a good ability, but for some cases such as his one, it turned out to be a game changer

image.png

Round 3 started with 6 vs 6, their Adelade Brightwing resurrected their fallen Agor, but that's not for long. My Carnage Titan made sure this time Agor went for good.

image.png

One of their main tank fallen... now things started to look ugly for them

image.png

Round 4 as usuall, my Uriel the Purifier always fought in near death condition. Prismologist had started her show, sending blast damage on their front line. I believed at this point, I had secured my win here.

image.png

image.png

Round 6 their last monster, Runemancer Atuat activated his LAST STAND ability, a horrifying ability if the monsters was extraordinary one such as Kron the undying. Unfortunately this one was a joke. Sorry no offense, I knew Runemancer Atuat was good, but he was not great. Just good...

image.png

What happened next was we swiped him out a.s.a.p, and we finished this battle flawlessly.

It's funny isn't it, we started the battle equally, he almost led the battle in the first time, however as time progress, They little by little started to fall apart. there are 3 points we can take from this battle:

THEIR TANKS WERE BETTER

I will go straight honest here, their thanks are better. Agor Longtail - Corsair Bosun is an excellent combo. Agor will taunt all opponent, getting all attacks on him and Bosun behind him will contain any blast attack from leaking out. Bosun will cleanse all status ailment on Agor too.

So this lose is definitely not caused by the tanks. They should win this battle due to having better tanks. The one that should be blamed are the monsters behind them, they failed to make the team stronger, either by helping out these two tanks or making a big damage to their opponents.

Initially I have said this will be an easy win for me, haven't I? So here I will share two of his biggest mistake which made me from the start having high confidence I would win this battle.

Mistake #1, No Damage Dealer

image.png

Which is stronger, Runemancer Atuat or Prismologist? Definitely Atuat is far stronger, but wait.. I said before he is decent, not a great one, did I? of course I did say that because Runemancer Atuat is a backline tank, not a damage dealer.

Life Element Rift Watcher is a bit funny, they have two magic tank here, Time Meddler and Runemancer Atuat. One suffice enough our needs. Both works the same, holding opponents attack while giving magic damage. Their are good at defending, not attacking.

Contrary to Prismologist, She is one of the best Damage Dealer from Chaos Legion Edition. When you have two tanks in your team, you can not afford to have more tanks with sissy attacks anymore, because the rest, 4 monsters, you need to mix a good combination of supports and damage dealers. All 4 supports to protect the tanks still makes sense than adding one more tank.

Mistake #2, The Summoner Made The Team Lost Focus

Stispa is a great summoner, he knows this so he bring supply runner in to increase all of his monsters. This way his team would have higher evasive ability and with additional phase ability from Sthispa, their team will be superior against magic opponents.

Sounds good right? but It would be useless and infact this might be the major reason why he fails to kill any of my monsters.

He already had Agor Longtail as Taunting Tank. Agor defended using Void Armor, so he should focused on how to support this void armor capacity, either by adding more monsters with protect (+2 armor) or add one more monster with Repair Ability such as lone boatman or Scavo Hireling, to help out Adelade Brightwing. There is no such thing such as ultimate defense, which you can evade and absorb magic damage using armor. Well there is, using Grandmaster Rathe + Coeurl Lurker. Not Agor Longtail and Sthispa.

image.png

this is the same issue why I have made this post last week. Many player lost their way when picked up the monsters because they got distracted by strong monsters and summoners
