Mycelic Slipspawn: What a Thick Meat Wall

avatar

Hi everyone, welcome back to my Splinterlands weekly battle challenge. This week we should have Mycelic Slipspawn as our main theme, and It's been a long time since my last post about Earth Element monster battle challenge so I feel very excited about although the battle I choose might be a so so one.

Mycelic Slipspawn is an Earth Element monster from Chaos Legion Edition and tt's one of my favorite monster due to it's taunt ability. This rare rarity monster is very affordable and I recommend you to go deep dive learning about this monster because Slipspawn and Grund are two of Chaos Legion edition trademark.

Strength

  • A high health is one thing for sure. All monster which have Taunt Ability definitely have a high health point.
  • Magic attack. The most famous Taunt Ability user is Shieldbearer from Life Element, however he uses melee attack which made him idle if you put him behind. This problem doesn't exit on Slipspawn due to the magic attack.
  • 2 damage and 2 speed. Although it is not a powerful attacker, it will not move the last and atleast can make a decent damage... not some formality 1 damage only.

Weakness

  • Although it has high health, it doesn't have any defensive ability. No void, no shield, not even an Armor point . So Slipspawn will easily get killed in 2 turn.
  • It's a great team player however it is not a solo fighter. It will make a good meta for your team however you still need 2-3 decisive monsters who will get you the win.

Style of Play

Most people believe the most suitable role for Mycelic Slipspawn is backline tank, so it will avoid getting massive hit from opponent main tank and he could get healed from team mate Triage ability and get some support from team mate Protect Ability.

Battle Preparation

I have these rulesets:

image.png

  • EQUALIZER ~ The initial Health of all Monsters is equal to that of the Monster on either team with the highest base Health.
  • TAKING SIDES ~ Neutral Monsters may not be used in battles.
  • 46 MANA

I am not quite sure if these rulesets are the right one for Mycelic Slipspawn. Equlizer ruleset definitely will negate Slipspawn superiority in high health. However there is an opportunity these ruleset might be able to showcase how a Taunt-Magician will help his team gets the win.

Let see what kind of team I could come up with:

PositionCardAbilityPlan and Strategy
Summoner+1 magic damageModern format favorite earth summoner. I hope she can excel my magic monsters
Main TankVoidOne of the strongest tank in Modern Format. Fast, high health, heavy hitter and anti magic.
SecondFlyI like this bird alot, a semi tank magician. This bird is a perfect choice to cover up any fallen main tank
ThirdTank HealThe best healer and the only healer I have. Not only this Goblin will heal mustang, he will kill some of the opponents for sure
FourthCamouflageI only need an extra mage and I put him in. That's all
FifthScavengerI don't have any monster with a Triage ability so I pick him as second backlink wall due to Scavenger Ability. He is my backup plan too incase I meet Thaddius with magic debuff
The LastTauntOur main theme for this week. Of course he will die first

HERE COMES THE BATTLE!!!

It's a Modern Format Battle between Death vs Earth. In general I should lose this battle because it's a very slim chance that Obsidian can win over Thaddius. Overall my team should lose this battle however I still have two condition which keep me optimistic:

  1. I have healer, they dont have any
  2. They have Dhampir Stalker, a very annoying archer with a high damage and always hit the target... however the rest are slow. So the speed gap between mine and his is small.

Let see how this will go

Round 1

image.png

  • The game started as both party buffing and debuffing their monsters and opponent's monsters.
  • My opponent had 7 range damage and 6 melee damage. Combined all they became 13 damage per turn.
  • My team had 3 melee damage, 2 range damage and 6 magic damage. Combined all became 11 damage per turn.
  • By number, my opponent had better attacking force.

  • As expected, my slipspawn died on the first turn. This looked silly, wasn't it? however the real question was how the rest of battle would go. Slipspawn sacrifice might be enough to buy some damage to break opponent Bone Golem, else my team would be clean wiped out.

Because of high health point from Equalizer Ruleset, I am fast forwarding this long battle.

Round 2-3

slip round 2-3.gif

  • Both my opponent and I lost our main tank in these round. I got more than my opponent because what he lost was his only anti mage tank.

Round 4-5

slip round 4-5.gif

  • I killed his badger and made his Sha-vi took the main tank position. This made him lost all his sneak attacks.

Round 6-7

slip round 6-7.gif

  • I lost my Peryton in this round as he lost his Sha-vi, his last melee attacker in these rounds
  • Technically with only 3 range attacker left, I couldn't see how he could win this battle.

Round 8-9

Round 10 - end

It's a long round until I eliminated all his range attackers.

Battle Discussion

This battle should be won by my opponent easily, He used Thaddius and he had bone golem the anti magic tank. However things turned the opposite because of this condition:

  • Taunt Ability - Mycelic Slipspawn.
SLipspawn didn't die uselessly. In the first turn, he took away more than 10 damage which actually saved my mustang. This made an opportunity for my team to kill the Bone Golem sooner.

  • Ridiculous High Health Equalizer - Mycelic Slipspawn.
This was a double edge sword. On one point it made opponent having a very high health point and hard to kill. but on the other side it made me win this battle. high health = more health from healing, and I was the only party that had healer. That's why on later rounds my Goblin became the MVP of this battle. And don't forget, A ridiculous high health Venari Seedsmith made their sneak attackers wated their chances.

This one tends to be a sacrificial pawn for the team, doesn't it. Brilliant when used right and the mana is high enough, though. The healing definitely helps in this ruleset. I like to put in double healers if I can.
