Maybe I’ll pick up some chaos just to hold for the long run. If things go okay for splinterlands those might go up a bunch.

That is my thinking as well. The trade value of CHAOS (USD and/or HIVE) might still dip but if Splinterlands is to be a success I find it hard to envision a scenario in which CHAOS trade value doesn't eventually increase from its current point.
