Starting Now as a New Player.. Is it worth it?

avatar

Hi all. DTAM here. I've been playing Splinterlands for about a month now and I wanted to put up a post for anyone thinking about joining the game now. There are a lot of old timers (OG) that will say its not even worth starting to play now but here is what I think and why...

I've been looking for my first foray into Play to Earn crypto games. What I needed was a chance to gather NFTs, earn crypto, not put a lot of cash into it, and have fun doing it. So far Splinterlands has defintiely offerred that. However there are pros and cons.

Pros:

  1. It is fun. I love the different possibilities of gameplay. It keeps you on your toes, trying new things, new teams, new combinations. So after a month I still look forward to playing every day.
  2. It only cost $10 for the summoners spellbook to upgrade your account and start earning. Easy transfer from paypal and you are good to go.
  3. Now there are card packs available to buy (there wasn't when I first started) so you can get your 1000CP power level and start earning DEC (the in game crypto).
  4. There is always a chance that a daily quest loot chest, or end of season loot chest will have a gold foil legendary card in it.
  5. The card rental system makes leveling up to the fist Silver level doable.
  6. The assets do slowly build over time. It is fun to watch some SPS currency grow naturally as well.
  7. Even if you do spend big and buy cards, you should be able to sell them again when you are over it, finished, or if they just go up in value.

Cons:

  1. I want to play more, but watching the DEC percentage bar go down is excruciating. And there isn't much motivation to play more than your daily quest if you don't have much power to level up. (I did just create a second account just so I could play a bit more)
  2. The gap between the wealthy and the beginners is huge. And it is tough to even get your first DEC. I know they stopped DEC earnings in Bronze 1 because of Bots, but it is pretty sad not to be able to earn those there.
  3. The rewards are miniscule. Fighting hard to win 5 battles only to get 1 credit is a bit tough.

So weighing the pros and cons.... if you are looking for a game just to have fun, and possibly get some good cards (valuable even), and not pour a ton of time into every day then go for it. I don't regret starting now at all, and I bet you won't either.

If you do start, feel free to use me as a referral DTAM. Newbie helping newbie ;)

I just joined today. Thanks for putting all of this up. It answers some of my questions... like why am I not earning anything for my wins. I'll keep at it and see what happens over time. I do enjoy it as well which is the main thing.
What do you think about the guild system?

I joined a beginner guild, called To the Top, and it has been an interesting experience. I like the comraderie, but there has been little more addition to the playable game because of it. It takes some time for all new players to earn enough DEC to even start battling in arenas. It looks like it does get fun at higher levels.
My advice is try everything that is an option. The more you know the better you will be and the more fun will be available to you.

I'm glad about your enthusiasm and I still think that splinterlands is still a good investment, it's just for the long term. Just like you, I also just started in Splinterlands and Hive.
One piece of information that I give you is that you also publish the post with images

Good post. I would also add as a pro point the fact that it is a very good (and gradual) way to get into blockchain and cryptocurrency.

If you can acquire cards to reach Silver it will be funnier to play.
