Onyx sentinel vs Lord Arianthus
So the sentinel is a really effective card against teams who go far lot's of ranged cards. So effectively you could use him in combination with Contessa L'ament. The only real downside I find with Onyx is that he only becomes effective when it's at max level.
Abilities
The only return damage ability it's missing is the magic reflect. but if we talk about him without any summoner then it would be a really effective counter towards melee and range. But with he could effectively get the reflect magic by using **Owster Rotwell** which is a 3 mana card.Bronze League
So in bronze league you can only use level 2 epic cards, since it has only the shield ability it's pretty much useless. You can use it when there's the ruleset that you can't use any melee cards. But there would be many better alternatives.Silver League
In Silver league it becomes a little bit more effective (gets the void ability), but is still lacking really hard as you can only use level 3 epic cards.Gold League
In gold league it already becomes more effective since it got the thorns ability now. Since in gold you can use level 5 epic cards.Diamond/Master League
This is where the Sentinel starts to shine as now you can use the full potential. As this is where he gets its return fire ability. A really good counter towards teams with full on range.
Lord Arianthus is a really effective card when people like to use a full team of magic. In combination with Bortus he becomes a really strong card against magic.
Abilities
The only return damage ability Lord Arianthus is missing is the return fire. But without any summoner he would be very effective against melee and magic. To be able to effectively counter everything he would need the summoner Lir Deepswimmer. But this is a 7 mana card, which depending on the rulesets of the game might be a high cost card to use.
Bronze League
In bronze league for legendary cards you can only use level 1 cards. Since this card has the shield/void abilities it could already be an effective card to use. Since a lot of people like to use magic only and if you would combine him with bortus the enemy team might effectively do no damage at all.Silver League
So in Silver league you can use level 2 cards as legendary. With this you get the magic reflect and with this it makes it a really effective card to go up against a magic team.Gold League
In gold league you can use level 3. So this means he basically has his full potential already since with this comes the thorn ability. So at this point he will be effective against magic and melee cards.Diamond/Master League
So now in diamond/master league you can use him at level 4 and he will gain a extra life compared to onyx.
So if we look at the prices right now, it would be cheaper to get a max level Onyx sentinel.

In my opinion, Onyx sentinel is more effective in with his price :)
Actually now that there will be a wild mode and the regular mode or however they will call it, he will be the best pick since then you can use it in both. While Arianthus has the beta reward card and as they said alpha/beta will be wild. So with that in mind even more so.
