My Experience as a Splinterlands Newbie

How I Discovered Splinterlands

With so much uncertainty surrounding the pandemic, and with no end in sight to the lockdowns in our country, I've mostly accepted the fact that I won't be traveling and or spending any of my money any time soon. This really got me thinking as to whether I want my money to just be stuck in a bank or actually grow and earn from investing. While I've put some of it in stocks, I was looking for other ways in which I can diversify my investments.

Friends recommended getting into crypto, which I've heard of before but never really bothered to look into. It honestly sounded scary, with how volatile and unpredictable it can be. But at the same time, it was exciting as it has the potential to really pay off. What really piqued my interest though in the vast world of crypto, is NFT gaming. For someone like me who grew up playing video games, it sounded perfectly aligned with what I love to do, and my investment goals.

However, some of the NFT game options had a very steep price of entry and I wasn't really sure if I wanted to commit a huge sum of money right away. As luck would have it, my partner had the same idea and he was looking around for an NFT game that didn't need such a huge amount of investment to get started. So, with a 10$ swipe from my credit card, and armed with my new spellbook, I started my journey in Splinterlands.

A Summoner's Humble Beginnings

I'm not really new to card games, I've played a couple of them over the years so I wasn't really that nervous going in. The tutorial was able to explain the basics well enough, but not all the mechanics and abilities found in-game. As with most games, I knew that it was only through playing and experience that I'll get to really learn how to effectively play the game. I had to learn the hard way how certain abilities work and just how vital positioning is in this game. I really like how strategic the game can be and how you can beat a more experienced player with the right strategy (especially when rulesets are in play), but of course, having legendaries and leveled-up cards really widen the gap between players.

Anyway, after winning a few matches to rank up, It didn't take long for me to find out that the real bottleneck is accumulating power from cards. As a newbie, I didn't own any cards and with no packs to purchase, the only option was renting out. But even with these minor obstacles, I saw great potential in the game, particularly with the earning aspect. It may be a slow start for now, but I expect things to pick up in the future, especially with the release of the new pack and the future plans for SPS. True enough, I invested a couple more money a few days ago, which instantly paid off after the announcement pertaining to Chaos Legion and the voucher system. So far, I have no regrets with the investment and time I've put into this game. I really see myself playing this game in the long term, and I'm excited to see what's in store for all of us in the coming days.
