The Virgin Suicides - Jeffrey Eugenides

I finished it on Saturday and I sadly found it quite underwhelming and disappointing... I think I may have hyped it up a little too much in my mind? Like the very title intrigued me and the way it opens with kinda like a shocking revelation that all five sisters have taken their own lives within the span of a year made for an interesting premise. But I wish there was a lot more to it than the girls being hyper sexualised and being treated like mere objects with only little hints at their emotional states and who they were as humans. Lux may have gotten the most screen-(word)-time but like it was mostly considering her relationships and all that, Cecilia being the wedding dress girl like not much characterisation there either and it all felt very flat to me. The other sisters felt like tag alongs just the way they'd become tag along dates... With this read I'm kind of getting to understand how much POVs matter to me (I've disliked Yellowface too because how much I detested the narrator) and while I understand it serves a purpose, it just ruins my reading experience unfortunately. I hated being in the mind of these shallow-brains who could see nothing beyond what mattered to them and only them. Like I felt there was more potential, exploring their emotional states, exploring some misogyny maybe how anything to do with mental health is kinda deflected off, not taken seriously or I don't know, I just felt very meh about the whole story at the end and I wish it were from a different perspective or done a bit differently. The only pro point I guess I could say is that I did like the writing and found it engaging enough despite the tone it took.
