Splinterlands Journey Vodcast - Wild / Modern Ranked Update - My Opinions
Hello to all my fellow splinterpeeps and welcome to my vlog! This season we again had some major changes to the ranked system in Splinterlands and I would like to share my experience and opinion with you guys. Oh, and check out my new mug! Let's see if I can make a #threespeak one next...
While the SPS airdrops are about to fade out, the ranked system performed a mitosis into two ranked reward pools we can now compete in.
- Wild: Same as the old ranked
- Modern: Only Untamed and newer cards. Lower CP requirement
Turns out the DEC rewards in modern are significantly higher than wild which allows a lot of players to rent pretty much fully leveled decks and leads to a very tough competition. As I don't want to deplete my ECR for a little bit of extra DEC, I stay in wild for most of the time, which is already quite hard for me, beeing amongst the top players on the leaderboard. Otherwise it would be smart to play modern with DEC earnings beeing about 10x higher.
I guess the main idea behind this change was to give new players a playing field without the need to compete with the very expensive OG cards. I'm not sure if this worked out as intended.
Owners of Untamed cards should really check the rental market right now. Even some of the common and rare ones are worth 5-10 DEC / day, so it became flipping expensive to rent a deck for the modern ladder. On the other hand CL cards are dirt cheap, so that might compensate for it. If the meta indeed allows you to win decent games with CL only cards, your return should be pretty massive! Otherwise I see the high rental costs eating up your additional earnings.
After my rental failed and le me finishing in gold league last season, I'm now earning gold chests for this season. I don't have the numbers on season chests, but I managed to earn the same amount of gold chests (in average value) with the same or even less effort, so earning gold chests while playing in silver might actually be a viable strategy. I expected the gold chests to be more than double the RP, but seems like that is not the case.
With the focus chests this would actually be a completely different story, as those require more than three times the amount of RP to unlock. Luckily the focus chest tier is determined by your current league.
Another big change that just happened are the new focus themes. Now you earn reward points (RP) for every win, and your focus only applies a 10% bonus per focus card used. I haven't had much time to test this though, so maybe that's a topic for another video. First impression is not too positive though, as it doesn't really feel like there is a focus anymore at all. Not that this is particularly bad, it's just very different to what we had for quite a few years now.
See you and thanks for stopping by!
Everyone who is picking up this game right now should have a pretty nice experience, although competition has been pretty tough lately.
I can see the devs are doing a lot to keep the game on the right tracks and I'm excited to see the untamed cards that I was able to collect beeing appreciated. Playing on my smurfs feels pretty unrewarding, so apparently the measures do work on actual players. I'm still seeing a lot accounts that appear to be bots though, so if those changes also affect their actual target, I'm not 100% sure. Time will tell...
