Taiyaki- Japanese Sweet

Hi hivers.
I’m sharing with you a popular Japanese snack and street food. It’s called ”taiyaki”. The snack is fish-shaped and usually has a filling inside. I think the most traditional filling is anko (red bean paste or jam). However, there are other fillings like custard cream, chocolate, crushed sweet potato and caramel among others. Below you can see the stalls and the variety offered:

“Tai” is the Japanese for sea bream. Sea bream (fish) is often eaten at and for celebratory events in Japan. For example, when a child is born or when a student graduates, sea bream is often a part of a meal. It is said to bring good luck.
My kids really love it. It’s a joy to see the joy on their faces when they see it. Usually, each snack has a definite fish shape. This time around, I noticed that the overall shape was rectangular with an “imprint” of the fish. I bought some cream custard and and anko-filled ones. They were a bit flat so for presentation purposes, I inserted skewers to show the fillings more clearly.

We could actually see the beans in the anko paste. I loved the custard cream-filled ones while my kids preferred anko. My husband didn’t mind either.
The fillings were just right. We’ve other taiyaki that really had a lot of filling. We were having this particular kind for the first time and somehow it seemed to be more delicious with less filling.
It’s a perfect snack to be had by itself or with a hot beverage.
Have you ever had taiyaki?
