Play 2 Earn Games - Watch Out For These!

More and more people are getting hyped about the metaverse. A big element of the metaverse is in my opinion the gaming aspect and with this the Play 2 Earn movement that is gaining more and more popularity. I found myself very quickly on this hype train because I am a gamer from the beginning. When I found out that you could make some side money for playing games I was caught by the idea! With that being said, there are a lot of crappy games out there and this is why I wanted to make an article about some of my favorite games to look out for which are already playable, or which are currently in development but are coming out soon.

Ragnarok

The first game on this short list is a game that was recently announced on the Hive blockchain. Its name is Ragnarok and you would assume that it is based around the Norse mythology but this is not the complete true. While the beginning stages of this game will be based around this interesting mythology, there will be a lot more Gods and Titans to play with. Now that we cleared the setting, lets move to the actual game.

As the design document (LINK) suggests, Ragnarok will be an NFT based deck builder which includes strategy element from the most strategic game on earth: chess. In short this means that you will build your own team or army and move into battle which takes place on a chess field. Whenever two opposite figures, in this case gods, titans or other legendary creatures, meet, they will fight against each other and whoever comes out victorious gets to stay on the field. This is especially interesting for people with great strategic talent as the developers promise that strategy and skill will have a great chance to beat stats.

Bild1.jpg

There will be some key features that will clearly diverse Ragnarok from other games such as the development and improvement of the NFT Gods or the novel chess battle system that I personally can not wait to see. Furthermore, the design document promises to deliver a great number of gods with unique passive abilities and an insane amount of spells and pets that can be used in battles. These features are just the tip of the iceberg and I encourage everyone that is interested to read the design document (LINK) that was released. This document also explains more how the game mechanics will work and to be honest it seems like a very in debt mechanic that is in the works.

One of the biggest questions that remained for me is: When does this game come out? According to recent updates the game is about 70% complete to go online onto the first test net. Furthermore, there will be an NFT claim soon which allows you to claim some Tokens which you can trade later against the NFTs that will be in the game. You will be eligible to claim these tokens if you had Hive in your Hive account on the 6th of January 2022.

Splinterlands

The next game should be no surprise as I often post about this game on my blog. Like Ragnarok Splinterlands has its home on the Hive blockchain and is one of the most popular out there currently. The best thing about this game straight away: It is already playable and has one of the biggest and nicest communities out there! With the new expansion, Chaos Legion, the developer team recently released a new card set which is still available in packs right now.

So for those of you who don’t know what game I am talking about, I will shortly summarize the game for you. In the mid 2000s there was this game called Yu-Gi-Oh. It was a trading card game that a lot of people played, I was one of them. Well, Splinterlands can be considered a trading card game, but it is on the blockchain and you can earn crypto while playing it and having fun! The most beautiful thing about this game is not only the card design but the amount of tactics that people can use to succeed in a battle.

Bild3.png

With six different races or Splinters you already have a big decision to make in the beginning of the battle. The next step is to select a summoner in this particular Splinter. This card will determine which buffs your monsters will get or which debuffs your opponent will get. Furthermore, each monster has one of three attacking styles and each monster has a unique ability which can influence the outcome of the battle. It is up to the player to decide which strategy he wants to follow to be successful in these battles. Furthermore, the strategy of the battle depends heavily on the boundaries of the battle. Stuff like mana or other attributes can set the scene for certain monsters to shine and it is up to the player to discover the perfect strategy for every circumstance. Additionally to the battle aspect, there is the collectors aspect. Not only do the cards have four different rarities (common, rare, epic, legendary) but they also have the chance to be golden if pulled from a pack. All in all, this game has what it takes to be an addictive little side hobby which can grant you hours of fun.

Illuvium

This next one might be the biggest game to come out in 2022. I am talking about Illuvium which is set to be the first AAA game on the blockchain. For those who want more detailed information, I made a more detailed article (LINK) where I only talk about this game, so feel free to check it out! For those of you who want the short version, you can stay here.

Bild4.png

In general, this game is the Pokemon of the crypto generation. The aim of the game is to collect the beast which are called Illuvials. Each Illuvial has three generations or evolutions which you can evolve by using them in battles. To reach the next stage you have to have three Illuvials of the same kind. The Illuvials will be divided into different classes and elements and also will have different Tiers. The higher the tier the harder it gets to catch them. Additionally, the more Illuvials of the same kind are caught the harder it will get to catch more of them. This means that the earlier you start catching the better.

Bild5.png

The best part about it is that these Illuvials are treated as NFTs and can be sold on the in game market place. Furthermore, there will be weapons and other items which can be crafted and found in the game which are also treated as NFTs. Like in the previous games the strategic aspect will be a big one and with different game modes this game will have a lot to offer. Very important to mention is again the collectible aspect, as the Illuvials will have a shiny and a gold version next to the normal version. This will make the collecting part of the game a lot more fun in my opinion.

Now when does this game come out you might ask? The open beta is supposed to come around Q1 or Q2 of 2022. The big news are that the developer team are recruiting some testers for the closed beta, so if you have a very performable PC you should definitely try your luck and apply for the closed beta!

Sorare

Last game on my list is a completely different one from the previous. Here, the sports aspect is more relevant and might appeal to the football fans out there. I am talking about Sorare which is basically the fantasy football game with little to no effort. The cards in this game are based on the real players and the scores that they are getting are based on the real life performance that they bring on the pitch.

In this game knowledge of football and a little bit of luck can bring you high up in the rankings. The most important part is that every 5 to 7 days there is a new season. This means that you have a chance of winning a price every 5 to 7 days. You just submit the players you have in your club to a specific league and based on their performance you will get a ranking. The higher your ranking the better your reward which is most of the time an additional player to your squad.

Bild6.jpg

The player cards are based on four different rarities again and base don these rarities you could get access to different divisions that you will be able to participate. As an advice for new players I would suggest to concentrate on the smaller leagues like the Korean or Austrian leagues as the players here are considerable cheaper and could bring you the same rating points or sometimes even better rating points than players who are playing in the Premier League or Serie A.

Conclusion

The majority of the introduced games are not out or are very strategy based. Nevertheless, I hope that I could give you some new insights or make you hyped up for one of these upcoming games. If you have some favorite games I would be more than happy to check them out so let me know in the comments as there are probably a ton of other games that are worth checking out!

The play to earn model is great and many are enjoying it.

Another aspect is just plain old investment. I'm buying, holding and renting cards and it's also a decent way to participate in this growing trend.

Yes you are completly right! :)

The renting card system is a very powerful method to earn some income if you are not playing!

I think ragnarok is going to be a solid game because the layout of it is so different from everything else. Plus a big pot might gain some headlines and get more people involved in it.

Splinterlands still has HUGE growth to come this year in terms of land, governance and a new dice pack after Chaos.

Illuvium I want to get involved with but those Ethereum fees always kill me. It looks like one of the best games though ever on that platform

Sorare I feel like I need to get involved with any tips on starting in that one?

For Sorare I would suggest starting off with the starter players that you get, it enables you to participate in the lowest divison and you will learn the game very quickly.

After that you can buy some players that have a higher rarity to participate in the higher leagues with nicer rewards. Like I said in the article, I would focus on the foorball leagues that are not tha tpopular as the players there are considerably cheaper :)

I just know Ragnarok and Splinterlands which I've been playing but haven't still gotten my moves right.

I sure don't like football, it's actually nice to see all this on the blockchain.
Have fun and earn

I am staking and have been staking ILV for months in prep for its release. I am excited about it. Ragnarok should be pretty cool too.

I have been playing Splinterlands since Steemmonsters.

Future is Bright for Splinterlands with the current SPS roadmap and I know the market could appreciate soon including $SPS, and of course Ragnarok, everyone is anticipating and waiting for it. Just giving free NFT to Hive Holders, gave this project a lot of popularity so all they need to do now is live up to the expectation and it could be hard for them since people have too much expectations for this game. Illivium seems expensive, and Sorare could be nice, but I will be contented with @Rabona at the moment. But all in all those games mentioned are all great!

Yeah I am very curious to see wheter Ragnarok can live up to its expectations but I have hope :)

Illuvium will have a Layer 2 solutions as far as I know so it should not be too expensive to make ingame trades. If you want to cash out, this might be expensive on the other hand, but who would want to cash out that quickly out of a starting game? :)

Well I keep the space open, since I started playing Splinterlands I haven’t seen any other P2E games that are better.

I think you can find a lot of videos on youtube. One of the more popular channels is Bulldog as far as I know but there are plenty other great creators out there: Just type in Splinterlands Beginner's Guide :)

Regarding Ragnarok, my fear is that they want it to be so complex that the average gamer will not take the time to learn how to play it. The length of games also can be an issue.

Thats an interesting point of view you are mentioning. It might be not so attractive if a game takes more than 30 min :/

I didn't know about Illuvium or Sorare. I'm not really into sports at all, but Illuvium looks pretty interesting. Definitely adding that to my list of projects to keep an eye out for. Thanks!
