Another week, another chance to show off your skills! This time around we are trying to find a way to win in the “Back To Basics” Ruleset. This one seems to be a very boring one since all of the Abilities are turned off but in my opinion it is a great chance to have an actual strategy. In this article we will discuss this Ruleset a little bit more in detail. We will talk about which type of monsters to use best in this occasion as well as discuss the strategy for the upcoming battle. Last but not least, we will take a look at an example battle that we were able to decide in our favor once again!

Back To Basics

First things first, let’s talk about the “Back to Basics” Ruleset. Like mentioned in the beginning, the whole purpose of this ruleset is to disable all Abilities that the monsters have. On the one side it might make the battle a little boring since there is less to look out for. On the other hand it makes it more calculated which also means that the person who calculated better wins in the end!

In general there are a few things to keep attention to. The first thing is that monsters without abilities will not have a disadvantage. This means that usually these monsters are great choices in this regard. Secondly, there are Abilities such as Scatter shot or Recharge that are arguably not the best ones for one dimensional strategies. This means that they would rather harm your playing style than help it. In this case, these monsters will have now an advantage because its only their sole stats that are counting now. On the other side, monsters with Double Strike or Void are having a disadvantage and are not worth their mana anymore in most cases.

Tanks Are Important

With this out of the way, let’s discuss the most important card on the field: the tank. In this ruleset, a good tank is very important because there is literally no way around him. Because Abilities such as Sneak or Snipe are disabled, the only real target is the tank and he needs to hold his ground! In this specific battle, we chose Uriel the Purifier. Not only does he have great speed and good Melee Attack, but also 6 armor and 10 health. Because there is no magic in this specific battle, there are more than plenty of hit points to be taken from him. We also need to keep in mind that due to the lack of abilities we can not support our tank with Healing or Repair which makes the basic points even more valuable.

An additional point why we chose Uriel is that his Recharge Ability is not active anymore. This ultimately means that he will deal 3 damage every turn which is pretty good if you ask me. Additionally to that, we are putting the Gargoya Lion behind Uriel in case he falls. This allows us to still have a Melee attacker as a back up.

If No Magic Then Ranged

For the damage I would usually go for Magic attackers since their attacking style would allow to go around the potential armor that our enemy has. Unfortunately in this case, every magic attacker was forbidden which meant that we had to rely on Ranged attackers. This is also the reason why I chose the Life Splinter with General Sloan as we are getting an additional attacking buff there!

First up we have the Prismologist, who actually does not benefit from the ruleset as his Ability would be blast. Nevertheless, he is a good choice because we cant get his attack up to 4. In this circumstance it is very important to hit hard and this is what we are able to do. With 2 armor and 5 health, this card would also make a good buffer in the first position in the worst case scenario.

Next up we have Portal Spinner who actually benefits from this given Ruleset. Not only Do we get rid of the Scatter shot ability but we can also concentrate our attacking force on the opponent’s tank. With 3 attack and additional 2 armor and 4 health, this card is a bargain for 5 mana!

Last but not least we a card that has no ability in the first place: Supply Runner. With 4 speed, this card is incredibly fast and with 2 attack gets buffed up to 3. Additionally, we have 5 health on this card which makes it a very good all-rounder in this specific use case. All in all, we have a great attacking force to work with and it would surprise me if our opponent’s tank would survive even one round of this.

Example Battle

Now that we praised our attacking force so much, let’s see what it actually can do. Our opponent chose the Fire Splinter which is a weird choice to be honest. It also seemed like he made the mistake of not really knowing what the Basic Ruleset does. Therefore, it was literally a sole slaughter. After each round the next tank of our opponent got destroyed and hence this battle was only a matter of time until we would celebrate our well deserved win.
