Splinterlands - Battle Mage Secrets - Counterspell Edition!

Another week another secret! Wouldn’t the week not be very boring without the weekly ruleset challenges? Well this time around we are trying to win with the ruleset of Counterspell. In my opinion a very interesting concept which we need to discuss in this article. Furthermore, we will talk about the teams and the strategy for the upcoming battles and last but not least we will take a look at some of the battles that we were managed to win with this strategy.

Counterspell Ruleset

First things first, let’s discuss this week’s ruleset. Counterspell basically counters every magic attack in the form of reflecting the magic damage. This is incredibly effective against magic attackers which usually do not have a lot of health points! This also means that they would die rather quickly and on top of that suffer the additional damage from your normal attacks!

Especially with an additional ruleset of Amplify, this ruleset gets immediately deadly for all of the Magic attacks since in multiplies the damage from reflect damage such as Magic Reflect or Thorns. In my opinion this should incentivize you to play ranged and melee attackers but there are certainly more than one right strategy that would lead to the goal of victory.

No Magic Attackers!

Well, with the previous things being said, I definitely tried to follow my own advice here. Although Magic attackers are my favorite cards to play with, these specific rulesets really would not forgive such an easy mistake. Therefore, we switched to the Melee and Ranged approach! In order to get the best buffs out of our summoner I used the Fire and the Life Splinter. Both of them are buffing the aforementioned attacking styles which gives us an advantage going into the battles.

On top of that, the first battle allowed us the flexibility of all the monsters having the Opportunity Ability. This meant that all Melee attackers would be able to attack from anywhere on the field. This also gave me the Opportunity of double down on Armor! With Arkemis and Ferox Defender, we had two cards that would benefit us a total of 4 armor! The thought was that if the enemy is not using Magic attackers, that he would have a hard time beating through all of this armor. On the other side, if they are using magic attacks, they will get punished by the Magic Reflect!

On top of that we need to make sure to deal enough damage ourselves. With this being said there are a lot of choices that would seem right. I really like to go for Double strike cards in the case of an ranged attacker. In this case I selected Pelacor Arbalest. With 6 damage per turn this card is definitely not the weakest one on the field. On the fire side we could not leave Grum or Tenyii out of the conversation. Both of these cards are real damage dealers. While Tenyii is supposed to defeat the backline of the opponent Grum will just demolish everything and everyone from the front!

Example Battles

With this being said, let’s take a look at the battles that we were able to decide in our direction! In the first one, the opponent did the crucial mistake of sending out a Magic team. With Amplify and Counterspell, his magic attacks resulted in a Boomerang! In a normal circumstance, his team would have been the clear favorite, but in this specific ruleset he just cut into his own flesh! Already after the second round, he only had one monster left. It was still a very strong one but did not stand a chance against the attacking force of our Fire team in this specific case.

On the contrary, the second team was a Ranged based type team. As you will see, this battle was already over before it began. The first shot went directly into the hearth of our opponent and deleted his Pelacor Arbalest. From there on it was cookies and ice cream with a very comfortable win for us!
