Mr. Bot Started to Take a Cut of the Loot

avatar

Mr. Bot's name is Archmage... To prevent one of the most common questions I receive about it. :)

Starting this season, Mr. Bot doesn't want to work for free anymore. And you know... we have to respect Mr. Bot's rights... right? :) It does the work, it gets something for the trouble.

Of course, bots don't have any rights yet... But there may be a time during our lifetime when they will. So, we'd better practice, lol.

Right now we are talking about a paid service. You pay, and you have access to the service. You don't pay, you don't. You can always do all the work yourself, as best as you can.

So, I discovered Mr. Bot refused to do any battles on my accounts for some time and I didn't know why. So I asked around.

I received the answer promptly. Mr. Bot is taking a cut on the loot going forward. No cut, no work.

The cut depends on the type of access pass you have. 15% for ARCHMAGEA, 25% for ARCHMAGEB, 35% for ARCHMAGE. The cut is taken from the staked SPS reward. Not from Cards, Packs, Merits, Potions or Leaderboard Prizes. Not for liquid SPS rewards (from liquidity pools or licenses). Hmm, question: how will land and Tower Defense SPS rewards be distributed? Staked or liquid?

The way this works is by delegating the required fee percent from your staked SPS rewards from ranked battles (only one or both formats, depending on what the bot plays), focus and season rewards to the billing account for ARCHMAGE.

This creates some difficulties if you have an account on which you still want to play yourself (like I do) because the delegation of staked SPS rewards doesn't discriminate between what you earn and what the bot earns. It'll take a cut from everything.

There is the option to stop the delegation on the days you want to play, but the bot shouldn't play on that day. This is a pretty annoying situation because it forces you to make a choice, either you or the bot, and to know the choice before the day starts.

Hard to quantify how much of a negative influence the fees will be. Obviously, if you win a lot of SPS, that cut given to the bot makes you wonder if it's worth it. If you win primarily other rewards or small amounts of SPS, this won't be the end of the world.

If you are interested in the topic, you can learn more about it from here.

Not worth it

That's debatable. If you run the bot when you don't have time, that is obviously a good option. Depending on the rental market, that can be an alternative, but not for the short term like a day or two days, and not if the market is down.

For example, I had very little time today. Possibly I will have very little time tomorrow too. My ECR was at 100%. Better run the bot and earn a good part of the rewards, than do nothing and waste the ECR at 100%.

What do you mean staked SPS? From the battle wins only? Or my entire stash of SPS?

Since staked cannot be transferred right away, how is the bot going to take the staked SPS?

From ranked battles, focus rewards, and season rewards (but only from SPS rewards, not any other rewards). It's a new feature Splinterlands introduced, you can delegate part of your staked rewards to a different account (works similar to beneficiary rewards on Hive). The rewards go directly to the account they are delegated to, also in a staked form.

Permanently delegate or just for the day you used the service?

Battle rewards and I think focus rewards it's for the day you use the bot. Season rewards it's for the season you used the bot - no bot for a season, no delegation required. Plus, if you only play the bot in Wild, you only delegate Wild rewards, not Modern rewards (and vice versa).

Does that mean if I use the bot for just 1 out of 14 days in a season, I am losing 35% of my season rewards?

Yes. SPS rewards. Not worth it for one day.

Do you think paying the bot is worth it? Thanks for the information.

Not sure. Depends on the situation. If one can play equally well and has the time, no, it's not worth it.

I understand they now have 55% of the bot market, I wonder if there will be any effect.

And Splex has 40% of the rental market and just entered the regular card market (buying and selling). What can I say, where is the competition?

The effect is that they can impose their high fees without worrying about competition. That's one effect. There are others when you control a market.

This was my thinking. They must be doing something right.

Really? I'm not sure where that number comes from but I can definitely say that I'm glad that's the impression at least.

In terms of number of accounts I don't think Archmage accounts for that high of a percent of the Bot market, but I could be wrong.

I help with all the marketing in their Discord server... and I don't believe we've ever said that.

Which discord server are you talking about?

It's too bad to see that the bot is no longer free and it is definitely a bit confusing. I guess it means that I won't be considering the bot for now.

It was on their roadmap that they'll introduce a fee structure. I am not happy about the one chosen, hopefully they'll come up with a more flexible one.

This bot is very expensive and I don't think it's worth. I heard that their winning ratio is good but that doesn't mean they charge huge like this.

Yeah, hopefully they'll realize a more flexible fee structure will be in their own interest as well.

Thanks for the fair look at this @gadrian :)

The use case you describe is one we definitely want a better solution for. We decided to roll out with an imperfect solution in order to have revenue that will help us stay sustainable until we can build better option for mixed play players or work with the SL team to get some updates to their endpoint which makes this more doable.

It's the biggest missing use case we'd like to serve, so it's definitely on our radar. Stay tuned as we work to have a better solution for it :)

That would definitely be great if we can start to play again the ranked battles when we feel like it, without paying a hefty fee on our own earnings. I like that you check out the feedback!
