Splinterlands: Lessons After the First Day of Playing with New Ranked Rewards System

avatar

The new ranked rewards system is in place since yesterday.

Although I thought I understood the system quite well, I still had a few surprises, being the first day and the switch from the old system to the new system.

Overall, I think the first day ended up okay-ish for me, that's because it probably would have been better if I hadn't made a few mistakes.

So, if you remember a post I wrote last week, I decided to stay in diamond last season thinking I'll be playing for diamond chests. For an element of comparison to future seasons when I would play for champ chests, I thought. And for the last chance to rent out my playing deck for the last part of the last season.

Well, I don't know what made me think I'd be playing for diamond chests. Since the new rules would be in full effect, my top achieved league last season was the one that gave the type of chests that I would play for. And that was Champion League, therefore, champ chests.

Ok, that was a miscalculation and I lost at least 1 day in gold 1 playing for champ chests for that, and probably a big chunk of day 2 too. Hopefully not longer.

The good part is that the rental income was pretty good for those days, so I don't regret stopping to rent my playing deck one last time.

The bad part is that I was in CL3 twice last season. And I could have stopped there and started from diamond 3. And to rent out my playing deck even sooner.

Ok, let's move past that.

What was good was that I started the new season with 100% ECR and with a pending DQ from last season.

So I got to complete that old-style DQ too. People who completed their DQ during the last 24h at the EOS most likely didn't have an extra DQ.

What I did wrong was that I didn't claim my DQ rewards immediately after completing my DQ. Old habits - to withhold claiming the rewards until you rank up to the higher league, and receive rewards for the higher league.

That deprived me of at least 5% ECR-worth of focus points until I realized my mistake.

It also forced me to play mostly my focus splinter for the last couple of games to get to at least 1 champ chest on the focus mission before my ECR went too low for the day. This way I became more predictable and lost a little bit in rank.

Going forward my target will be to rank up early in the season, so I can earn more SP and FP sooner. I will most likely win at least 1 chest in the focus mission doing that no matter what. But most likely at least a few of them, because I only started playing the focus mission when my ECR was at 85% or below yesterday.

Even with all the mistakes, and I've done a few on my first day and preparing for it, I've done almost as expected:

image.png

The benchmark for me is the season rewards: 3 and a half champ chests in gold 1while losing at least a few matches at the end by playing the same splinter consecutively (even if I have multiple summoners for Water and the opponent didn't know how I'll play).

In my calculations I made last week for various scenarios, I considered in gold 1 I could earn 4 champ chests on season rewards (using linear progression to next chests), so I wasn't far.

To recap.

The good:

  • nice rental income and free time (from playing Splinterlands) for 5+ days at the last EOS
  • 3+1 champ chests under my belt
  • had DQ rewards too
  • started with 100% ECR

The bad:

  • could have rented out earlier and started in diamond 3 at the same time
  • still in gold 1
  • bad management of claiming DQ rewards depriving me of FPs (this one can't be repeated)
  • forced to play focus-mission-only at the end, as a result of the previous point

My next mission is to get out of gold ASAP. That has a much higher priority than any focus mission.

I heard people don't like some parts of the new ranked rewards system. I don't know... Maybe the focus mission is too harsh at the beginning of the season. But let's give it some time and let people adjust.

I want to see the new season rewards more time in action before I can judge. So far it works as intended from what I can see. And the mistakes were mine.

I too hope to climb to diamond earlier and although most bots are not on the scene, some still play. Here from list.

I don't mind bots. I think there have been quite a few disincentives for them lately to collect more rewards than humans.

I agree the Focus missions are a bit hard at the start of the season. I expect the number of chest earned to go up as our ratings get back to mid league and max league levels.

That's for sure. Most issues will have people who aren't patient and who aren't used to ranking up.

That's a good idea, but knowing how hard is for me at the beginning of the seasons, there is no way that I will accomplish something like that... lol...
Similar to my post title from a couple of days before, it's now in Splinterlands... "it's different, but still the same" with these focus stuff... I have "earned" fewer chests on the first day, but I got shitty focus...
So, from my point of view, we will earn a bit fewer chests, but hopefully, the content inside them will be more valuable (if I understood the part with higher league and better rewards)

Just curious, how many focus chests have you earned? Mine isn't relevant since I played the DQ at the beginning and forgot to claim rewards too, so lost quite a few FP.

Well, I had Fire Splinter "focus" which isn't my favorite and in general, I have problems at the beginning...
I got ONLY 4 chests... :( But, the rewards weren't bad...
1 gold foiled common, 200 DEC...

Nice rewards! I assume those are diamond chests...

I won over 3000 DEC on my only focus champ chest, which is cool.

I didn't do much better today at the focus chests. Almost two, meaning I need another win for the 2nd one. But I did better than yesterday on my season chests AND I reached diamond, which was my goal. On the downside, I depleted 6% more ECR than I should have for that.

Honestly, I have no idea which one are they... lol... I just play and do my best that I can in battles... lol... I was in the Gold league when I opened them...

I started in Gold 1 too, and I play for Champion chests.

You can recognize them by the image or if you click Details it'll tell you what was your highest league the previous season, which gives you the chest type you play for.

Oh... now I get it... So, my reward chests are from Diamond league as I have finished there last season...

(Edited)

Also from this season, it's not important where you finish, but what was the highest league achieved for the type of chest you play for. It is still important however where you finish for the league you start in.

That's good to try and weigh the positives and negatives. We can only adapt and play the game as it is.

Yeah, I think I'll do well. Just a couple of glitches at the beginning. And I believe everyone will adapt quite easily. Unless they don't want to play as much, because it certainly requires more than the minimum number of games played to get the best rewards.

Good to know. People cant expect to login and start withdrawing cash which i think is the expectation.

Is there any snipe, sneak type of focus mission or is it all splinter focus?

They are still around, as far I heard Matt. And other focus missions will be added too. He said he wants to add at least 10 more focus missions.

Thanks. That's comforting to know. Single color is not working for me at the moment lol.

I don't really know but I don't like the current system that much. It just seems like they are forcing us to keep using a splinter type and I don't like spamming water splinters all the time.

I think we are doing this wrong about the focus mission. Spamming the same splinter over and over again is definitely not the option. What is interesting is that you can spread your focus games throughout the 24h period. I need to try that more in the future.

The problem is that only using the focus splinter gives you points right? Using a different splinter isn't going to work out.

That gives points for the focus mission. But you earn points for the season chests with any other splinter. If you can win using the focus splinter for many games in a row that's perfect. I use the focus splinter a lot too, but I change my summoner or the way I play each game.

Hi there, thanks for the post first of all. I am not getting any points for my wins even I used the focus summoner, does anyone else have the same problem, what am I doing wrong?

You should use cards you OWN or RENT. Starter cards don't give you rewards anymore. If only some of the cards you use are owned or rented, the rewards are reduced accordingly.

Here's an example, from Splinterlands' post:
