Dilemma of Byzantine Kitty - To Sell, Or Not To Sell

NFA Caution: Before you read this, I want to make sure you know that I don’t give any financial advice in this (or any other) article, these are just my personal thoughts and experiences.

Pulling Byzantine Kitty

I still remember the moment I pulled my first (and probably the last) ever Byzantine Kitty, the iconic legendary summoner of Splinterlands besides Yodin. I can easily recall the moment however I had not even a slight idea of how valuable the card already was.

I can call it simply luck, and lack of interest that I didn’t sell Kitty, not even when it’s price pumped so much that it became one of the most valuable cards in Splinterlands history.

Since I wasn’t really hooked on the game at that time, I didn’t really pay attention to my cards, it was more like my gambling attitude which led me to buy some Untamed packs and open them. It was like a few more months later when I first even bothered to actually check the prices of my cards, thinking that they were probably worth a few bucks, but that’s all.

I was extremely shocked when I found out that Kitty was about 700$, I can still remember running through my flat like an idiot, screaming that I hit the freaking lottery. My girlfriend was like “okay but how much did you actually spend on that game?” - Less that 20$ I said.

That was the moment I decided to start paying attention to the game and discover it’s features, gameplay and of course, the earning potential it has.

Now that I’ve spent the rest of last year playing it day by day, I am the happy senior member of a hungarian guild with the best community ever, and managed to reach Gold III. league which was my first huge goal in-game, I have a nice collection of both low value but high potential cards and high value cards as well.

Now is my time to put all-in?

So first of all, I have to tell you that I’m THAT kind of a gambler. Feeling that adrenaline rush soaking my brain is just one of the best things in life for me. And opening packs is kind of the thing that gives me the adrenaline rush. But when it comes to talking about hundreds of dollars, I can sort of control myself.

Considering the fact I can lose control of gambling, the first time I thought about selling Kitty I immediately stopped myself and tried to move on. But the urge to make profit has grown and it formed into a strategic move to be reconsidered after seeing this:

To explain a bit: after the arrival of Chaos Legion, Byzantine Kitty was selling as low as 319$ for a while, then it climbed back to around 500-600$, now it is again at 719$ and it seems to be decreasing again. This is when I really started to think about selling Kitty.

Is it possible to sell at sort of high now, to be able to buy back again when it falls down between 300-500$, and by that making a profit of more than 200$ by simply selling and buying?

The real question is: will it fall back to such a low price again? After thinking about it for two days in a row I considered myself to be too much of a coward to risk that much.

There are only 1,439 Byzantine Kitties in the whole game and it won’t ever be reprinted. If I won’t be able to buy it back because it won’t get that cheap again, I don’t think I will ever be able to own one without sacrificing too much.

After that, I started to think of making only a smaller profit by swapping Kitty. As you may know, there is a site called Card Auctionz, where you can get back 3.35% of your money in DEC by simply just buying a card through that site.

By such a high price as 619$ which is the cheapest option to buy Kitty right now, you get back 6505.84 DEC which is equal to 21.14$ at the moment, which can buy you 5 Chaos Legion packs or if you are up to get lots of CP right now, 5 legendary Chaos Legion cards giving you 2500 CP - technically free.

The problem with swapping cards here, is that if you sell a card, you have to pay 5% market fee right away, which means 30.95$ in total when selling a 619$ worth card. For this reason, it is not profitable to simply sell a card and then buy it back, since you will lose 1.65$ of your money instead of making profit.

After all, and also considering the risk of losing Byzantine Kitty forever, you may understand why I decided to rather keep it and be extremely happy owning this card.

However putting it on the rental market may not be that profitable as selling high and buying low, it is still a much safer way to make some profit by simply owning a high value card.
