BATTLE MAGE SECRETS Weekly Challenge! - Fire & Regret Ruleset

Hi Guys! In this post we are exploring on another Splinterlands ruleset. The ruleset we are focusing on is Fire & Regret.

Fire & Regret
In a Fire & Regret ruleset, all units receive the Return Fire ability at the start of the battle. This ability will cause enemy units that attack with ranged attacks to receive damage back.

The damage returned is equal to damage of the attacker divided by 2, rounded up. Ranged attack units with the Reflection Shield ability do not take damage from reflected magic attacks though while team with Amplify ability will increases this damage.

Lets take a look at a Modern ranked match with Fire & Regret as one of the ruleset. The battle restrictions are:
Up to Eleven and Fire & Regret with a max mana of 34. All splinters are allowed in this battle except Death. The Video for the Full Battle can be seen here:

Helios Matriarch6SummonerRight off the bat, I eliminated the using of Quix and General Sloan as these 2 summoners focused on Ranged units. I didn't wanted to use any Ranged units in my lineup due to the fact that I was in a Fire & Regret ruleset with Up to Eleven as the other ruleset. This made using Ranged units terrible unless I deliberately wanted my Ranged unit to die (I didn't think of that during this match). I ended up using Helios Matriarch (with Fire splinter as partner) because it gave me a speed boost and also allowed me the option to use Dragon and Fire Gladiator units.
Venari Heatsmith31stI had Venari Heatsmith in the first position as it is a cheap units with good defense against all kinds of attacks. Plus it has no offensive power and thus is a good units to use beside another unit with Weapon Training ability.
Ferexian Hero82ndI placed Ferexian Hero at the 2nd position so as to give Melee attack capability to my Venari Heatsmith. Ferexian Hero also has Reach ability which allowed it to hit from the 2nd position.
Iidri Fyre63rdI had Iidri Fyre in the 3rd position because it is a unit with no offensive power as well and would also gain Melee attack from Ferexian Hero. Although Iidri Fyre can't attack from this position, it can draw attacks onto it because of its Taunt ability. This meant my Venari Heatsmith will only need to worry the opposing tank attacks while Iidri Fyre draw all the remaining attacks to itself. This allowed my Venari Heatsmith to stay alive longer to use its attack.
Fina Voxom54thFina Voxom was my chosen Gladiator unit to use. It is a fast unit with Opportunity and Piercing ability. These coupled with a high melee attack made it a deadly unit. I hoped it will grew into a monster with my opponent focused on my Iidri Fyre.
Vruz25thVruz was chosen to protect my Fina Voxom from Sneak attacks. Also Vruz has Martyr and if it died from Sneak attack, it will boost my Fina Voxom.
Clockwork Aide46thClockwork Aide was there to give more speed boost to my lineup and also to protect my backline from Sneak attack.
Total Mana:34

Opponent Lineup:

My opponent went with a Earth splinter lineup with Lobb Lowland as the summoner. The reason my opponent went with Lobb Lowland was to deploy Gladiator unit as well and Katrelba Gobson was the gladiator I had to face.

End of Round 1:

The round started with my Fina Voxom destroying my opponent's Uraeus in 1 hit by smashing through its armor with Piercing. This gave my Fina Voxom's stats a boost due to Voxom's Bloodlust ability. Exactly the opening I needed.

At the frontline though I had problem breaking the opponent tank as the opponent Pelacor Mercenary had Self Heal ability.

End of Round 2:

Round 2 saw my Fina Voxom carried on its killing spree by killing off my opponent's Fungus Flinger. But the death of the opponent Fungus Flinger boosted the opposing Gobson's stats. Unfortunately for my opponent, its Gobson missed another of its attack and thus miss out on a killing opportunity to further grew. Meanwhile I lost 2 units in Venari Heatsmith and Iidri Fyre at the front. I wasn't too worry about that though as my Voxom had already grown too powerful for my opponent.

End of Round 3:

image.png

I started round 3 with my Voxom killing off my opponent's Gobson. Its almost game over at this point as my Voxom continued to grow while my opponent no longer had any gladiator unit.

End of Round 4:

image.png

Voxom took out another of my opponent unit, Thane Newsong, and was now capable of one shotting my opponent Pelacor Mercenary. Technically at this point, my opponent still had a chance of winning provided the Pelacor Mercenary will keep dodging my Voxom due to its Flying ability while the Djinn Biljka shot me to death with its magic attack. However chances of that happening was extremely slim as Voxom had a 75% chance to hit the Pelacor Mercenary each round. And I only needed 1 hit.

End of Round 5:

Well my Voxom one shotted the opposing Venari Mercenary and it was game over for my opponent.

KEY STRATEGY
My strategy was to use avoid using ranged units while growing my Voxom into an unstoppable monster that will steam roll my opponent units. It worked very well as my Voxom got its first kill right from the start.

SUMMARY
In most cases, Ranged units should be avoided in Fire & Regret ruleset. However deploying ranged units is still a viable strategy if your ranged units had Martyr and you intend them to die anyway. My opponent had a very workable strategy in letting Fungus Flinger died to boost up Gobson. However if Gobson can't hit its target then its not going to help much. Luck do played a very important factor in this game.
