This week's Monster we have our focus on is none other than one of, I would dare say, most often played Monsters from the Earth Splinter as long as the mana cap allows it, namely the Mycelic Slipspawn. This is due to the fact that it synergizes beautifully with Obsidian, as it is a Magic attacker, but maybe more so due to the fact that it has a very sought after ability from level 1 - Taunt. Taunt is a very valuable ability which is rarely seen on Monsters, especially in Modern league (Riftwatchers is actually about to change that).

Now before we get into the stats discussion of the Mycelic Slipspawn, let's have a sneak peek into its LORE

So, the Mycelic Slipspawns seem to be Queen Mycelia's plant soldiers, I should have already figured that out but I guess I did not give it much thought prior to reading its lore.

Alright, we've got some idea of what an Mycelic Slipspawn is, after glancing at its lore. Let us have a look at its stats and abilities at different key levels now.

image.png

  • The Mycelic Slipspawn is a Rare Monster. At level 1 it has 2 Magic Attack, 2 Speed, 0 Armor and 10 Health but most importantly, as mentioned in the intro, it starts off with the Taunt (All enemy Monsters target this Monster, if they are able to) ability. The Taunt ability could be tremendously important and decide the outcome of a battle, especially in specific rulesets, so noone should sleep on it.
  • At level 4 (max for Silver) it gains a second great ability to compliment its Taunt - Forcefield (The Monster takes only 1 damage from attacks with power 5+). Forcefield is an absolute game changer for the Slipspawn as it gives it a lot higher survivability against high mana budget Monsters who often have 5+ attack, especially after being buffed by another friendly Monster.
  • At level 6 (max for Gold) it gains an additional point in attack for a total of 3. Gaining additional attack points is never a bad thing for sure.
  • Finally, maxed out at level 8 it has 3 attack, 3 speed, and 12 health. And in addition to that it also gains a third ability - Slow (Reduces the Speed of all enemy Monsters). Slow is one of the most powerful abilities in the game because it changes the way the whole battle plays out, and on top of that, it also makes your Monsters harder to hit.

Now that we know what the card does (or doesn't do) at the different levels of play, let us have a look at the battle I have chosen to showcase.

<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>BATTLE<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>

  • The line-up of the Battle and the Ruleset:

image.png

The ruleset for this battle are Healed Out (No type of healing is allowed in the battle). The mana budget is the maximum currently possible in the game - 99, and there are only two available splinters - Earth and Dragon. Since I have decided to showcase a battle from my Bronze alt account, I will go with the Earth Splinter for this one.

image.png

image.png

I will go with Mycelic Infantry as my main tank for this battle since it is the best tank card I have available to play on this account. Generally I would have chosen an Unicorn Mustang, however, I have been playing only cards I own on both of my accounts for some time now, and the Unicorn is a bit too expensive for my taste as far as 1 BCX rare Monsters go.

image.png

image.png

Following immediately after the Mycelic Infantry is our protagonist - the Mycelic Slipspawn. There are generally 3 spots I usually place Monsters with taunt - 2nd position (if I'm certain I won't get "Yodin-ed"), last position, if I do feel I might get wrecked by Explosive Weaponry or Main tank for the times when Melee Monsters cannot be played or I really want to land direct heals on the said Monster. In this case healing is out of the picture due to the ruleset, that's why the 2nd spot is fine.

image.png

image.png

The 3rd place in the line-up goes to the Goblin Psychic. It can't heal in this battle but it still is a Magic Attack Monster so that's good enough for me in the particular case.

image.png

image.png

The 4th spot is for the Regal Peryton. The Regal Peryton is another Earth Monster I just love playing due to its high speed and Flying ability. It is great for basically all rulesets, I'd argue it also works in Reverse Speed since its Magic Attack can only miss Monsters with Phase (and they are not common at all, at least now before we get the RW Phase Summoner).

image.png

image.png

5th in the line-up is the the Magi of Chaos. Magi of Chaos is a great neutral Magic Attacker. It is highly valued in basically all levels of play, especially in tournament play. It is obvious that I am building a Magic Spam team (a common strategy for Bronze/Silver), and the Magi of Chaos fits perfectly in it.

Last but definitely not least is Djinn Biljka. I absolutely expect Djinn Biljka to be the last "man" standing in this battle if my strategy is successful due to its Camouflage ability which prevents it from being attacked basically until it gets to the Main Tank spot unless it dies to splash damage prior to that.

It is time for a quick round by round analysis:

  • The Summoner I am going with for the battle (as you might have already guessed) is Obsidian as I do not have any other Earth Summoner (on this account or on my main) you will likely see me play her in every Earth Splinter battle under the sun (at least for now). That's fine though cause I like her a lot. My enemy is also rocking Obsidian as their Summoner of choice. Their Obsidian is level 1 though so some of my Monsters have a slightly higher level than theirs. Overall it seems to be a pretty close match-up. Let's see how it goes.

image.png

  • After 1 round, both Mycelic Slipspawns have been sniped down by the cannonade of Magic Attacks on both sides of the field. I have also managed to get some hit points off of the enemy's Unicorn, however, it does make a difference since it has the Void ability. Thankfully it cannot be healed up due to the ruleset, and that definitely works in my favor.

image.png

  • Round 3 begins with both sides having lost their Main Tanks. It is now up to my Goblin Psychic and the enemy's Regal Peryton to hold the front line. That surely won't last for too long though.

image.png

  • IT's Round 4 and the "Main Tanks" have already been replaced by new recruits. By the looks of it my Regal Peryton is about to die but it will fire a shot before that because it is the fastest Monster on the board.

image.png

  • Round 5 is here and things seem very, very close. I can't really tell how's going to win by just looking at the 1st stage of the round.

image.png

  • Round 6 - the final round. It's either me or them, but you will learn who has won if you click on the link of the battle or if you are just aware of the attack priority when two Monsters have equal speed.  This is actually useful to read for sure.

A Bonus Battle from my Gold level main 😎:

image.png
The Mycelic Slipspawn is a great defensive Magic Attack Monster for the Earth Splinter. It can also do pretty well in the tank position if needed. It is specifically great for that from level 4 onward due to the additional ability it gains as we discussed earlier. The Mycelic Slipspawn is currently valued at $0.32 per BCX, which is actually a fair price for such a potent Rare Monster. I would definitely include it in my must-buy list if I did not have it already.
