The Venari Knifer is a Melee Monster, member of the Earth Splinter, of common quality. Its moderate mana cost and thorns ability make it a good choice against melee heavy comps.

Now before getting into the stats discussion of the Monster, let's have a sneak peek into its LORE
So it turns out the that the Venari Knifer is an actual rogue. Now its image, name and abilities make a lot more sense.😁

Okay, now that we have a vague idea of who or what the Venari Knifer is, let us have a look at its stats and abilities at the key different levels.

  • It starts off with one special ability - Thorns - right off the bat, which is actually not very common (😃) for a common card. I suppose that's cause of the fact that while 6 mana is not that much, it is actually quite a bit for most common cards.
  • At leve 2 it gains an additional Speed point which brings the total to 5 (which turns out to be very important later on)
  • At level 3 it gains an additional attack point, bringing the total to 3.
  • At level 5 which is the max level for Silver League, it gains one more Health point for a total of 8.
  • At level 6 it gains a second ability - Backfire - which actually makes sense give the fact that the Venari Knifer is a monster with high speed - the higher the speed, the higher the chance of the monster to dodge enemy melee and ranged (non-magic) attacks, as long as the ruleset is not Reverse Speed.😀 And Backfire does 2 damage to every opponent who fails to hit the Monster with this ability.
  • Finally maxxed out at level 10 the Monster has 4 Attack, 6 Speed, 0 Armor and 9 Health, which are pretty good stats for a 6-mana melee counter card.

Now that we know what the card does (or doesn't do) at the different levels of play, let us have a look at the two battles (because they are pretty quick) I have chosen to showcase.

<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>BATTLE 1<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>

  • The line-up of the Battle and the Ruleset:

image.png

So with the mana restriction of 36, I can build a well-balanced team. The Equalizer ruleset is also in play, which on the other hand requires more focused fire if you want to be successful. However, in equalizer matches you also want to have the opponent play the monsters with the largest health pools, while you benefit from the fact, playing lower health monsters which have low for a reason. I've decided to go with the Venari Knifer as a main tank since I felt the Thorns it has in its arsenal will be beneficial.

image.png

The 2nd place in the line-up goes to the Djinn Biljka. As I pointed out low health Monsters with additional abilities are particularly helpful in the Equalizer ruleset. Djinn Biljka's Void ability paired with a larger health pool turns it into a good anti-magic tank instantly .

The 3rd place in the line-up goes to the Mushroom Seer. I always throw a Mushroom Seer into the mix when I have the suspicion that my opponent might play a few Magic attackers

image.png

The 4th spot is reserved for my favorite healer in the game - the Goblin Psychic.😜 Heal + Affliction at level 4 - enough said.. 😁

image.png

Wood Nymph is a healer I often choose over the Goblin Psychic in lower mana matches, or in matches where I want to roll with a specific line-up. The fact that it costs 2 mana less than the Psychic really helps with that. Sometimes I roll with a double healer setup which includes both healers. This is apparently one of those times.

image.png

In the last spot I have a very powerful ranged attacker, who I rent from time to time to have fun with while playing the Earth Splinter and that is the Mitica Headhunter. Even at level 1 it has 4 attack, 5 speed and 5 health + the Snare ability which can be pretty handy in certain situations. Of course, it can be mostly played in higher mana matches cause its power comes at the hefty price of 8 mana.

image.png

It is time for a quick round by round analysis:

  • I have chosen to go with my favorite Earth Summoner, namely Obsidian, who is at level 4 (max for Silver League), as for the enemy - they have chosen to go with a level 1 Lama Mage, so my higher level Summoner and Monster versus the opponent's imbalanced Legendary Summoner but lower level minions. 😄

image.png

  • After 1 round, there are no casualties and both my opponent and I have nerfed the magic damage coming from both sides. That's potentially more impactful for me as it negates Obsidian's hero power. My opponent's strange choice for a tank (Regal Peryton) is close to dying, while my Venari Knifer is at full health due to the good work of the two healers I am running.

image.png

  • At the start of Round 3 I have managed to take down the Regal Peryton and now the enemy's 2nd Monster is at half health while the Venari Knifer is almost at full health. My Mitica Headhunter has taken some damage from the enemy's Uraeus and Goblin Sorcerer.

image.png

  • Round 4 is here and the Gobling Sorcerer is next on the hit list. Note that my Mitica Headhunter is sill alive and kicking. This is why it is not a good idea to spread your damage when the ruleset is Equalizer.

image.png

  • Round 5 has arrived and my Venari Knifer finally has the chance to actually do some work with its Thorns ability against Uraeus, if it actually survives that long to attack. Looking at the speed values of the different Monsters it definitely seems that will not happen.

image.png

  • Round 6 reveales the glaring mistake of the opponent. Why would he play Kron second to last and not last in their LamaKron setup. Final stand on anything else but Kron makes no sense in their line-up. Not that it would have helped the enemy win but still, it is important to play correctly.

image.png

  • Round 7- Kron has fallen and now all that is left is for me to finish off the pesky fungi.😎
    image.png

<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>BATTLE 2<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>

  • Let us begin with the line-up and the Ruleset:

image.png

image.png

So this time around the mana restriction is a bit tighter. I am also not allowed to utilize and neutral Monsters but on the other hand Monsters on both sides get an additional 2 armor. This is a match from a novice tournament I recently took part in so the summoners and all Monsters are limited to level 1. I've opted to use the Venari Knifer as front line yet again hoping for its Thorns ability to do some work.

image.png

The second spot is reserved for the Regal Peryton - a flying magic monster - the reason I currently have it in this spot is that it is actually quite tanky if the enemy's team consists mainly of melee and non-magic ranged attackers. It has won me more games in the tanking spot (when the main tank dies) than I care to count. And it being a magic attacker also gives it the advantage of being able to attack from the said first spot.😉

image.png

The 3rd spot goes again to my faithful Goblin Psychic - never leave home without it.

image.png

In the 4th spot I felt like playing the Goblin Tower this time. It was probably mostly due to the limitations to the cards which could be played imposed by the tournament rules and not so much that I am in love with the card. Still it's not a bad card at all - with its 3 attack, explosive damage and 4 armor. The only downside most of the time is its Speed of 1.

image.png

image.png

And last but not least we have the Mycelic Morphoid. Its job here is to protect our back line from 1-2 hits. If the enemy's sneak monsters have low health and no shield, they might as well kill themselves by hitting the Morphoid, which could completely disrupt the enemy's battle plan.

image.png

It is time for a quick round by round analysis:

  • As we can see I have again opted for my Obsidian - this time level 1. My enemy is also using the same Summoner, and of course it is the same level due to the tournament restrictions. Funnily enough we have both opted to use the Venari Knifer as our first pick but my opponent's line-up does seem to have an advantage over mine. Especially in the face of Hunter Jarx.

image.png

  • After 1 round, my Venari Knifer is still alive, at a whole 1 health point, while I have managed to take down the opponent's one. Hunter Jarx and the Acid Shooter have begun whaling down on my backline though.

image.png

  • At the start of Round 3 my Goblin Psychic has lost its armor so this means that this turn it will likely die to Jarx's arrow. The tanking spots are both occupied by the Regal Perytons, and mine has a slight advantage healthwise. It has to be noted that the opponent's Goblin Psychic is golden and it will therefore always take its turn before mine.

image.png

  • Round 4 - after Hunter Jarx took down my Goblin Psychic, my frontline totally collapsed. All that is left now is for my opponent to finish off my remaining Monsters. Well, at least the Venari Knifer won this battle as well... 😁

image.png

image.png
The Venari Knifer is a fairly priced (in terms of mana) tank from the Earth Splinter, which will definitely rarely be your MVP, but is a very nice Monster to support your defensive efforts for sure. It can definitely fit midrange to high mana games. It can be specifically useful for Rulesets such as the Melee only one.
