We are going to get Kei in just a few days (this Saturday) so I figured why not share a battle with her for you to see how her ability works, as I am one of the 3 people, who accidentally received a copy of her from an RB pack before the devs fixed it.

Now before we get into the stats discussion of Kei, let's have a sneak peek into her LORE.

So, Kei is a former knight of the Gloridax Empire, currently pretending to be on the side of the Chaos Legion, but really, really impatient to chop off the heads of the Legion commanders who subjugated her. I'm definitely rooting for her.

Alright, we've got some idea of who Kei is, after glancing at her lore. Let us have a look at her stats and abilities at different key levels now.

image.png

  • Kei is a Legendary Monster. At level 1 she has 3 Melee Attack, 4 Speed, 0 Armor and 6 Health and he starts off with a new ability - Enfeeble (Each successful attack reduces the defender's Melee Attack by 1) and Reach (Melee attack Monsters with the Reach ability may attack from the second position on the team). This makes Kei an incredibly useful off-tank for those moments when your opponent feels good about playing Mantaroth or any other strong Melee damage dealer in the Main Tank spot of their line-up.
  • At level 2 she gains her 3rd ability which is actually very relevant to the game plan when you play Kei - Ambush (This Unit gets to act before the battle begins)
  • At level 3 she gains her 4th ability which is also very important - True Strike (This Monster's attacks cannot miss). As we know Splinterlands is a game where misses are a regular occurrence, so not missing is always a huge boon.
  • Finally, maxed out at level 4 she has 4 Melee Attack, 5 Speed, 0 Armor and 7 Health. She also gains her final ability - Shatter (Target's armor is destroyed when hit by an attack from Monsters with Shatter).

Now that we know what the card does (or doesn't do) at the different levels of play, let us have a look at the battle I have chosen to showcase.

<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>BATTLE<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>

  • The line-up of the Battle and the Ruleset:

The rulesets for this battle are Supersneak (All Melee attack Monsters have the Sneak ability) and Close Range (Ranged attacks may be used in the first position in battles). The mana budget is 38 which is not a great amount of mana so it does not give me the ability to play whatever combinations of Monsters I want. The available Elements are Fire, Water, Death and Dragon. I have obviously decided to give the Dragon Element a shot this time around. The battle I have chosen is a Tournament battle from a couple of days ago.

image.png

My Main tank for this battle is one of the two new Promo cards for the Rebellion Set - the Grimbardun Smith. He is a 6 Mana card with No Attack, 3 Armor and 10 Health. This definitely is quite telling for its purpose, and if you look at the set of abilities he has, you can definitely tell that he will be a pretty good support card with defensive functions. Not quite the level of Almo Cambio but having in mind Almo is going out of Modern, he might be a decent substitute. His skillset includes: Immunity (this monster is immune to negative status effects), Void (reduced damage from Magic attacks), Shield (reduced damage from Melee and Ranged attacks) and Repair (restores some armor to the friendly Monster whose armor has taken the most damage).

image.png

image.png

In the 2n spot I have placed Daarg Deadblast. At level 1 he has 3 Magic Attack, 1 Speed, 0 Armor and 5 Health but most importantly he starts off with two very important abilities in the current meta - Weapons Training (Adjacent units with no attack gain this unit's attack, up to a maximum of 3) and Swiftness (All friendly Monsters have increased Speed). At level 2 he gains 1 Health for a total of 6, he also gains another fabulous ability - Triage (Heals the friendly back-line Monster that has taken the most damage). At level 3 he gains 2 more Health points for a total of 8 and also his final ability - Dodge (Has an increased chance of evading Melee or Ranged attacks). Finally, maxed out at level 4 he has 3 Magic Attack, 1 Speed, 0 Armor and 8 Health. That additional point in Magic Attack in fact is really, really crucial as he provides that additional point of attack to any adjacent No Attack Monsters.

image.png

image.png

The 3rd spot is reserved for the Merdaali Guardian. It's a great support Monster in various rulesets with its frankly Meta abilities - Tank Heal (restores a portion of the Monster in the first position's health each round), Repair (restores some armor to the friendly Monster whose armor has taken the most damage) and Strengthen (all friendly Monsters have increased Health). It can be very useful for sure but is often taken out early by enemy Monsters with Overpower so that's one of the drawbacks it has for sure. Thankfully she is in no danger of getting hit by Overpower thanks to the Summoner I am planning to run this battle.

image.png

image.png

The 4th place in the line-up goes to our protagonist - Kei. I don't have to place her in the off-tank spot since Supersneak allows her to attack from any position in the line-up. Besides she does not really have that much health so she's better off hiding a bit behind when possible.

image.png

image.png

In the 5th spoty I have placed Oshuur Constantia. I've got her here to support my front line Monster through her Tank Heal (Restores a portion of the unit in the first position's health each round) ability as long as possible. She can also take a hit or two if it gets to that, while healing herself in the meantime. What's important is that she has the Reflection Shield (This Monster doesn't take damage from Blast, Magic Reflect, Thorns, or Return Fire) ability so she does not suffer any damage when her Magic Attacks are reflected back to her. She also has Resurrect (When a friendly unit dies it is brought back to life with 1 Health. This ability can only trigger once per battle) which is definitely one of the other top tier abilities.

image.png

image.png

The last spot in the line-up is for the Angelic Mandarin. It has Triage (heals the friendly back-line Monster that has taken the most damage) and Silence (reduces the Magic Attack of all enemy Monsters). Triage could be huge for healing the backline, and Silence is also great whenever you expect you opponent to play Magic attackers.

image.png

It is time for a quick round by round analysis:

  • The Summoner I am going with for the battle is, as you have probably already guessed based on the way I have structured my team, is Lily. Lily is great paired with the Grimbardun Armorsmith and a bunch of support Monsters in the back because that makes the Smith really hard to kill. This strategy is mostly susceptible to Scatter Shot because Scatter Shot does hit Camouflaged Monsters but I do have 2 back-line Heals through Triage so I am also having a way to mitigate that sort of damage. My opponent (and an YGG Brawlers guildie) has decided to use Akane in this battle and rely on Mantaroth and Djinn Chwala.

image.png

  • After an "Ambush" round and a round of exchanging blows my Grimbardun Smith has taken a bit of damage but there are no losses on either side.

image.png

  • Round 3 - both "tanks" are still alive, and the only Monster which has perished is Vruz, buffing the enemy Dr. Blight and Djinn Chwala.

image.png

  • Round 4 - Kei has started reducing the Melee Attack of Djinn Chwala with the help of the new Enfeeble ability. We'll see if she will be able to get her attack down to 1 by the time the battle ends.

image.png

  • Round 5 - no new casualties on the battle field and Djinn Chwala's Melee attack keeps decreasing.

image.png

  • Round 6 - I have managed to take down 2 enemy Monsters while I have not lost a single one yet.

image.png

  • Round 7 - Djinn Chwala's attack is down to 1 (starting from 5), so she currently does not pose any threat to my Grimbardun Smith. Good job Kei!

image.png

  • Round 8 - all that's left for my Monsters is to finish off the badly injured Djinn Chwala and Dr. Blight who has been hiding in the shadows up until now.

image.png

image.png
Matsuuri Kei is a very interesting Melee Monster for the Dragon Element. Thanks to her mix of abilities, she can definitely ruin the day of any melee-heavy, front-loaded opponent. We don't currently know what price she will be trading at but I'll make a guess that it will be in the $20.00 - $30.00 range.

Over and Out,

This is a powerful lineup without a doubt, plus Kei is a great card, excellent play and post format.
