When Harmattan Smelled Like Home

Anytime that Christmas is fast approaching, what comes to my mind first is not the full house, the gifts, the get together after a while. But what usually comes to my mind is those cold mornings, dry lips and always thinking of how to get my body well moisturized to avoid all those white white stuff.

It is a known fact that this season always comes up around this time every year and it comes in a silent way, but it looks like this year's own is delaying a bit, because I am yet to see those dry airs, cloudy atmosphere early in the morning, cracked lips of some people, and those very cold breezes at night. But I have started seeing carol songs being played all around except on televisions and some radio stations, and it has started to feel like a Christmas period already because over here, people have started greeting eachother " with "Happy New Year's Eve" in advance. No rush, just the usual flow at the moment.

However, as someone who also enjoys doing one or two in the kitchen, I will say that one of my best memories will be around the kitchen, though there is not always much to do but periods like this always make it look like there is much because of some things like preparation of the meats and other delicacies, preparation of the house as the aroma from the cookpot mixes with the air in the surrounding.

In the evening of the days, friends and family who are around share some lovely times together as they catch up from where we left it, share some stories, discuss some real-life issues, throw some football banters, and talk about what is yet to come. In-between our discussion later in the night, as power went off, we switched on the generator as to keep everything lively again then we played some videos games before going to bed to get some rest.

For us, Christmas days are always as simple as it can be. No fancy things and no much paparazzi, we just go to church to sing, pray, and show our gratitude as we commit the rest of the days into God's hand.

But that is just what it is because now, I kind of miss that moment because these moments come with some pressure, billings, work, traffic, and all but yet, those lovely memories of those days can be let go of me easily because I still remember because of the good memories it brings from those family times together, visitors coming and going, shared meals and cheerful giving.

So I will say that my favorite Yuletide moment was not a single day but those lovely moments of togetherness, and just like some people usually say that church is not the building, it is the people, same applies to home too, home is the people not the place.

So, moments like this, I as I share the memories, I love myself more, forgive quicker, share one or two with the young ones and I embrace each moment.

Thank you for reading.

The smell of Christmas rice and stew in the air those days made me salivate so much even before I had the actual meal. I wish we could go back to those days.

Gone are the days when harmattan usher is into Christmas season, today is 19 and everything is still the same.

But then. I really enjoy those days and the aroma of food that fills the air.
