When the Night Calls Your Name
It might not be all communities, but the majority of the communities that I know have two faces: the daytime, where everyone goes about their daily work, where the road gets busy, the market gets filled up, and different activities usually take place. And then, we have the nighttime, where everything seems very calm, so calm that someone can even listen to his thoughts loud and clear, and the truth always comes out.
The motive of becoming a vigilante came to my mind not after I had seen plenty of Marvel movies but after something very surprising happened in my community that caught everyone by surprise. It happened during the night when a shop opposite my house was raided at midnight. The thieves broke into this woman's shop, packed all her provisions, her bags of rice, soft drinks, and water that she was selling without leaving anything behind. She made a report to the police, but there was nothing they could do other than to tell her to get a CCTV camera in case of next time, but there was no next time because she packed away from that soap after the terrible event.
And luckily for me, when this happened, I was watching this series called Daredevil: Born Again, where Matt Murdock lost everything he had, and even with that, he still became his city's vigilante, where he built everything back and still kept his community safe from terrors, believing that everyone deserves good justice. Then it hit me so hard that if I had such power and money, would I stand by the people?

And to be honest, what came to my mind was that if I have those things, I will simply put streetlights in all the communities that I can, install cameras to monitor the streets, put on patrol buses, employ secret observers and watchers, and then empower those who are honest and truthful to safeguard the community. Not that I will wear costumes and be jumping and running round the street like a superhero. But those things will not give room for crime.
And then, I remember the country that I am in, that if I start using my money to fight crime, I might be stepping on the toes of some powerful people who are secretly benefiting from it. Because here, as some of us know, it takes extremely powerful people to expose someone because the more you expose a party, the more layers you get to see.

So who do I depend on, authorities? Partially, but with my eyes wide open. And if I eventually have everything that it takes, I think I will become a vigilante, but not the type that moves around with weapons, but the type that provides solutions. Like using my money to expose the darkness to everything in a silent way. Not a whistleblower. Because if I have to depend on authorities, it might be another story.
Because sometimes when our help is needed, especially at night, it is either we answer that call or we just pretend like it is not our names that are being called.
