I heart @splinterlands

In June of 2018 a few others and myself took an ENORMOUS risk and bought heavily into an unproven idea by @yabapmatt and @aggroed, who I had never heard of before.

See part 1 of my Top 5 Splinterlands Moments So Far here: https://hive.blog/splinterlands/@goldmatters/my-top-5-splinterlands-moments-so-far

Keep in mind when Splinterlands first came out it was NOTHING like the version we enjoy today.

Its crucial to remember that the older “Whales” in this game didn’t build valuable collections easily.

It has taken years of risk, opportunity cost, and fortitude to hodl through many scary periods.

Here are 5 more of my most important moments in the game:

5: My first gold foil legendaries:

My very first pull was a *gold legendary card I didnt even realize this until I began writing this post. This is pretty close to one famous story of @rentmoney pulling a GFL in his first pack ever.

Exhibit A:

These are the first Alpha packs I ever bought, for $2 each.

Note the timestamps on top of the screenshots. 10 minutes after purchasing the boosters I pulled a Legendary Chromatic Dragon. At the time I would have no idea what that meant and probably forgot about it for 3.5 years….until now.

*Also note for splinterlands historians: THERE WAS NO SUCH THING AS GOLD FOIL CARDS AT THAT TIME. These dragons look gold but they were not gold foil cards, and the gold foil status was applied only to a percentage of cards later retroactively.

Also note that the cards have no stats and there was no such thing as ranked battle, DEC, or tournaments.

SPS, renting, guild brawls…. These things were years in the future at this point.

I told you things were different back then.

I’m also including in the #5 moment the time I pulled 2 GFL Alpha Selenia Sky’s and a GFL Alpha Lighting Dragon all in 24 hours. (This was months later after gold foils were a thing.)

4: Free Land Plots

There used to be these things called Mystery Potions. Most people thought they were a waste of money and didnt buy them.

I bought mystery potions and pulled at least 5 lands plots.

We all know what happened to land next :)

3: Giving away a gold foil epic card

If you’ve been a Splinterlands player for more than a few months you might know that ive given tens of thousands of dollars worth of 24k gold jewelry, splinterlands cards, unopened alpha packs, and crypto (steem, hive, dec) to splinterlands players through contests.

One of my favorite moments was giving away the Gold Foil Alpha Naga Warrior to a contestant:

The winner of this contest received the card that is listed for $4000 currently on the monster market.

4: Meeting @nateaguila

One of the coolest moments on my journey was meeting Nate Aguila, the Creative Director of Splinterlands.

Meeting a team member in real life was such a cool experience and I only wish we had gotten a chance to talk more.

Here is us meeting a in a dark loud bar in a major US city. Nate shook my hand with + 4 speed which is why the photo is so blurry.

The Splinterlands team has given me the confidence to invest so much into this amazing game, and Nate and @raynie have been around since the very beginning.

5: Kickstarter backer #2:

I have believed so strongly in this game from the very beginning. And I’m proud to be KS backer number two.

Remember we are talking Splinterlands when it wasnt even called splinterlands yet, there wasn’t even a game, and all we had was a promise of tournaments in some murky future.

All you could do was literally open packs and stare at cards with no stats.

I’m very proud to be amongst the early adopters to make the game possible.

Thanks to the founders who had and executed on the dream, and old and new players alike who are making the play to earn model a reality.

We’ve only just begun.

Awesome Post!

Times sure have changed in the Splinterlands universe. A $500 investment back then was much riskier than a $5000 one today. I also had no clue who the founders were but with a little digging and seeing they were witnesses and devs I took the dive. Once I seen the hard work they put in I Jumped in full speed ahead. Anytime I remotely think about selling I'm reminded not to by the teams hard work. I also remember that Naga giveaway you did and your lucky Mene box posts :) And of course it goes without saying I remember flipping that GFL Gold Dragon like it was yesterday. It was under the very first card I flipped in the very first Pack I purchased. I have told the story so many times it almost became an ongoing joke that I would mention it at any given time.

Feels like just yesterday. Definitely my best investment (and I went 100x on bitcoin). My wife plays now too :)

Good to hear from you MC:). Same here. We will always be the first to do the cornering strategy. Nice work!
