Hello Splinterlands community, the community challenge for this week is to share and showcase a battle where a noticeably weaker or lower-level team defeats what appears to be a much stronger opponent. This is a good challenge as it allows the community to share their big moments in the game where they upset a powerful opponent and it can also serve as a great knowledge and strategy sharing in the community as the technique and team building composition that was used to achieve the victory can help other players on their battles. I have some battles where I was the underdog and I was able to pull off an upset victory over a stronger opponent. I will share a particular battle where I was able to get an upset victory over a stronger opponent because of the rulesets that are present on that match. I will talk more about the strategy and game plan I had for this battle below and also share the battle link where you can watch the replay of the match.

Why you chose this battle

Initially I want to share recent battles where I was able to get an upset victory but since some of those battles are not that impactful for me, I decided to do some throwback from the past and share this specific battle where I got a huge victory from what appears to be a stronger opponent because of the rulesets that are present on that match.

Here is the match that I want to share, it is a ranked battle with the Counterspell and Earthquake ruleset present in the match. My lineup consists of level 1 summoner and monsters from the Earth and Neutral elements. At the first glance, it appears that the enemy team is more stronger as it has a level 3 summoner and also deploys multiple leveled up monsters which tends to have better stats compared to my team.

The reason that I was able to secure the win on this match is that I was able to take advantage of the rulesets that are present in the battle which are the Counterspell and Earthquake ruleset. The Counterspell ruleset gives all the monsters on the battlefield the magic reflect ability. That ability causes all magic dealing monsters to take back damage whenever it strikes a unit. It puts magic damage based team composition on a big disadvantage for this kind of match. The other ruleset in this match is the earthquake ruleset, this ruleset causes all non flying monsters in the battlefield to take 2 melee damage every round.

Because of the effects of the ruleset present in the match, I was able to score the upset victory as I have used monsters that has the Flying ability which makes them immune from the damages coming from the earthquake ruleset and since all my units only deals melee damage, I would not suffer the consequences from the Counterspell ruleset. On the other hand, the enemy team is primarily composed of magic dealing monsters which makes them very vulnerable to take damage back from the effects of Counterspell ruleset, additionally the enemy team only has one unit with the flying ability which makes the enemy team to be also severely affected by the earthquake ruleset.

ROUND 1

On the first round my team was already in a disadvantage when the enemy team was able to take down my Fungus Fiend and Xenith Monk. The counterspell ruleset somehow manages to deal damage back to the magic dealing monsters of the enemy and the only monsters left on my team are the ones with the flying ability.

ROUND 2

During the second round the enemy team was almost wiped out when the earthquake ruleset takes affect where it instantly took down the enemies Chaos Agent, Mycelic Morphoid and Djinn Biljka. The counterspell ruleset also works well in my favor in this round where it causes the Magi of Chaos to be defeated after it lands a magic damage to my Pelacor Mercenary.

ROUND 3

During the third round my team was able to take down the enemy's Centauri Mage also with the help of the earthquake ruleset. My Pelacor Mercenary was also taken down in this round which leaves me with two monsters remaining wherein they are both in good condition heading in to the next round.

FINAL ROUNDS

It was a back and forth action between Nectar Queen and Regal Peryton in the final rounds of this match. During the fourth round, my Nectar Queen misses its attack to the enemy's Regal Peryton while the Regal Peryton manages to deal magic damage to my Nectar Queen which causes my Nectar Queen to deal back damage to the Regal Peryton with the help of the counterspell ruleset. During the fifth round my Nectar Queen manages to deal melee damage to the Regal Peryton that secures me this victory.

Lessons from the battle

This specific battle emphasizes the importance of knowing and understanding the rulesets that are present in the match. It shows how the rulesets can turn the match around especially if the rulesets affects all the units every round. On my upset victory I manage to take advantage of the two rulesets that are present in the match which are Earthquake and Counterspell rulesets where I was able to capitalize its benefits. Without those two rulesets in the match, I will definitely lose it as I have deployed melee monsters only and the enemy team has magic damage monsters that are leveled up as well.
