2022 A New Player's Journey Chapter 2 Rent Time

Continuing on from where I last left off, I have to set a goal in playing Splinterlands. Without a goal I really wouldn't know if I'm making any progress or not. I wouldn't be able to evaluate if I'm playing, learning, and getting better at the game or not. So that's why I'm setting a goal for myself. After getting "stuck" in the game, I knew where I should head--forward.

I'm a new player. After having played the game for a few days I was able to transition from mindlessly choosing summoners and monsters(and not even know the difference between the two)to knowing what I should choose and why I should choose them.

The basic was that first spot should always be tank. After that it can be the damage dealers, whether it's a melee monster that can attack in 2nd slot, or ranged and magic monsters. It'd be best if there was a healer too. But I think tank+dps is all I can do right now with the limited starter cards I have. Maybe there will be room for a full team later in the higher ranks as I'm more experienced and I grow my collection more.

So now I know how to play the game at a basic level. I'm winning more than I'm losing. But with the free cards I find that I can't get near Bronze II. Maybe I'm still a newbie after all. Not that I can even reach Bronze II even if I had enough rating as my Collection Power--the total DEC burn value of all my owned cards--was a pitiful 5. I'm really thankful for my referral for the card and the DEC he gave me. I really needed it. It was better than having nothing.
I needed 1000 CP for Bronze II. And probably much much more for the higher ranks.

I knew what my options were. My ability to play can always be improved the more I play. It wasn't an insurmountable problem. The problem was elsewhere. I actually needed to use good and strong cards in order to win my matches. The free starter cards just aren't good enough to get me to Bronze II. I needed cards that I didn't have, both to use and for the CP requirement.

I knew about buying and renting. Even as a new player, the concept just came up really quickly.

I only had buying packs or cards in my mind. But with me being still ignorant of most things about the game, I didn't really know what cards to buy, or if I should buy packs. There was just too many things I didn't know. I didn't want to make a quick decision and regret it later for being a mistake.

I had subconsciously filtered out renting as my option. At that point I didn't know how cheap renting was. I thought I would lose out more than I gained.

It wasn't until by a stroke of luck I stumbled upon a youtube video recommending new players to rent, and which card to rent for the lower leagues that I actually tried out renting and found out that it wasn't as bad as my preconception of it.

If I'm in Bronze III I'm not making any DEC when I win and my ECR drops anyway. But if I rented some good cards to play and enough cards for power I could earn enough to cover my renting expenses and maybe more by playing in Bronze II.

After renting I began my climb to Bronze II. Wins and loses came in equal measure but with each step closer I knew I didn't make a mistake and I was finally making progress. After a while I managed to get to Bronze II. And from the DEC I've been getting from the few wins I've managed to get I'm convinced I'd be able to make enough to cover the renting expense and stay in Bronze II at least.

I'm really thankful for my referral for giving me 69 DEC. I have 45 DEC left and I feel like I can make enough DEC to cover the rent expense.

I'll just keep playing and see how high I can go, all with the aim of getting more DEC for now in case I needed to rent more cards. For now I'll move the thought of buying packs and cards to the back of my mind. I'll rent for now as I learn more about the game.

So far I haven't regretted this choice yet.

P.S. I couldn't initially post this because I didn't have enough RC. I've read somewhere that you can stake HIVE and get more RC or recover it faster or something like that. That's one thing I needed to learn more about in the future.

P.S.S. Thank you very much giemo! I can finally post after waiting for a few days.
