A New Player's Splinterland Journey Chapter 3 Lose and Learn

avatar

With the cards I’ve rented I managed to get my rating over to 750, enough for Bronze I.
Coincidentally I saw in my youtube feed videos mentioning new players and going to silver rank really quickly, all within a day.
This made me overestimate myself and assumed that I should rent enough power to get to Silver right away for increased season reward as the season ends in just three days and in silver I can get more daily reward chests.
As I played some more matches though, reality dawned on me. Forget Silver, I’m not ready for Bronze I. And can I even keep my Bronze II league? I had high loss streak of six. It was a humbling experience for sure. I dropped to about a little over 400 rating from all those loses.
I wasn’t ready for Silver. Although I wanted to get there for the better rewards(it seems everyone’s playing to get higher ranks for better rewards) I knew I just wasn’t good enough right now.
Although I had rented some strong cards like Fineas Rage, Axemaster, Kelp Initiate, Torhilo the Frozen, Creeping Ooze and Mylor Crowling my ability as a player was still in its infancy. Some games where I thought I would win I had lost. And still in other games I saw monsters that I’ve never seen before and absolutely didn’t even know what they did or how to counter them.
How did I get ahead of myself like that? After my initial easy wins with the rented cards and move to Bronze II I had thought, “what now?” and immediately thought of renting more power to get Silver. I was sitting comfortably in Bronze I’s rating and at the time I was winning more than I was losing. I assumed Silver would be the same.

But now I know that Silver is still far away. I need to get comfortable playing in Bronze first.
My ECR is at 55 percent right now and it continues to decrease with each match. And since I didn’t win many matches straight I lost my ECR but I didn’t get any DEC rewards as a result.
For now any thought of additional rental is going to the back of my mind. I need to play more. Whether I win or lose doesn’t matter. Though it doesn’t feel good to be on a losing streak. Hahaha.
I also heard from the youtube videos that it was also an option to invest in buying 3-4 additional spellbooks and play on multiple accounts so you’re always earning good DEC from having high ECR and when the ECR from any one account drops to low level then not play it for a day or two.
I will just play with one account even if my ECR is low and I get miniscule amount of DEC per match.
I’ve never had good experiences playing multiple account in online games. They take too much attention and time and significantly more effort than if I just played normally. At that point it felt more like a chore than play. And if a game isn’t fun to play then it isn’t a game anymore. So that’s why I’m sticking with just playing on one account. Multiple account just doesn’t work for me.

Two days have passed since.
I recently purchased about 5000 dark crystals and one Chaos Legion presale pack. I don’t know what to do with them yet but at least it’s counting to the airdrop. It feels nice knowing my asset in the game is growing, even if only a little bit. I’m tempted to open the pack, but holding on to it is also a good move. But even if I want to open it now I can’t. I need to have enough potions for all five cards first.
My first season in Splinterlands will end in a little over 24 hours. Although I still feel like a newbie, I’m happy to say that I’m learning the ropes. I didn’t pay attention to abilities before but after loss after loss I gradually learned to use abilities like Snipe, Sneak, Tank Heal. It really opened my eyes and made me realize there was a deeper mechanic to the battles contrary to appearances.
My cards began to have their rental cancelled by the owners. It was just two at first but the closer to season end the more began to cancel. I’ve finally personally experienced the end of season rental nightmare. I’ll really have to be careful with renting so my power doesn’t drop before season ends. That’s why I’ve cancelled all of my rentals and will calculate how much CP I need and time it so that I only rent it for 1 day and if the rent is cancelled I would be able to safely pass the end of season.
I’m sitting in the middle of Bronze II. I’m not sure if I should push to Bronze I and get enough CP to finish the season there. Can I even do it? I’ve gotten up to Bronze I’s rating range before but I usually get knocked back down before long.
Whatever the case, the next 24 hours will be an exciting one for me.
