An alternative approach to burning CL packs - monthly caps on packs sold, and if they're not sold, they get burned

There's a recent SPS proposal that looks to burn unsold Chaos Legion packs.

Here's my response to a more sustainable and potentially FOMO inducing model for future editions of Splinterlands cards.

  • 1 million packs are available per month (bonus packs are included)
  • Any packs unsold will be burned at the end of the month
  • Vouchers are still required for bonus packs, and bonus packs count toward the 1 million sold

This would see 33,057 packs available for sale per day; with anything not sold each day to be burned.

This model would likely see a short supply at the start of a set's release (as we've seen pre-sales have massive interest) but would serve to continue FOMO at the end (and at the start) of each month.

This would fuel the "oh, there's only this many packs left before x" (for example air drops) - or the end of a set, and would also allow the Splinterlands development team to set a regular cadence around their development.

This way, they could say "this edition will be on sale for x period of time", allowing them to better build a roadmap and product development cadence for their artists, qa, and other teams, enabling better internal operational efficiency.

It would also, as I've said a few times before, add a whole bunch of FOMO into the game for both seasoned and new players alike.

With a limited number of packs available each month, we would also see changes to the way Champion and Diamond League for Modern are populated with players, because, with the slow release of card packs, there would simply not be enough packs for everyone to compete at that level the moment the set is released.

There would also be other wide ranging metagame changes as the result of such an idea, including the impact on tournaments, brawls, and the card / rental market - which would change meta game to some extent.

My other remark is that is it okay to have two sets available at the same time. If I recall correctly, we had an overlap where beta and untamed editions were available simultaneously. This isn't a bad thing. They'll eventually go away. Markets will market. :)

Interesting alternative. Big fan of the XX million total packs available for 9 months with a full burn of the difference remaining on-shelf, but shrinking down the volume available per month and turning up the FOMO on a monthly basis is brilliant!

We should have player proposals available soon - would strongly consider giving this one a thumbs up.
