Splinterlands: Is the Venari Marksrat Really Better Off Dead?

Today I opened up 18 gold daily loot chests. Overall much better than usual but I started with a full fifty energy! I was hoping for the stars, hell, I'd even take the moon! Not today.... I got some decent cards and a little SPS, I can't really complain. Then I saw one card that I've seen over and over, the Venari Marksrat. To be honest I just use him as pure cannon fodder, many times in first position to really boost the stats on the second card. Then I decided to actually look at his stats:

At level one honestly you might as well slit his throat yourself because that's really all he's good for, his martyr ability. But at level five he picks up snare making him useful to help take away those pesky flying opponents. Then at ten he picks up shatter, which is always a fun ability! My only problem is mine still level four...

My conclusion on our soon to die friend the Marksrat: he's only really good dead until higher levels. Maybe once I've got him up to snare and shatter I might rethink his usage but for now I find the martyr to be my principal use. One card that is truly better off dead.
