Splinterlands: Crystal Jaguar is a great counter against melee monsters
Splinterlands is a complex game and it allows for various different cards and strategies. Each fight is different as there are various different rulesets applied and this can give specific cards an advantage depending on how you use them. In this post, I talk about a card named Crystal Jaguar and why it is useful in fights.
Featured Monsters

Crystal Jaguar is a life monster that starts off with no ability, but it learns thorns and retaliate ability. This makes it a good low mana card to use as a tank and especially against melee monsters due to the thorns damage. It currently costs about 10 cents per BCX.
Rule set, Battle and Plan

The ruleset this time is super sneak and up to eleven. This means that all reflected damage is amplified and all melee monsters have sneak. There is also 18 mana available and I am the choice of fire or life splinter.

My summoner is Mother Khala due to it's lower mana cost and +1 health is quite useful. At the same time, I can use cards to the highest level in Silver league using this summoner.
| Splinter | Mana Cost | Position | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mother Khala | 3 | Summoner | +1 health |
| Soul Fiend | 0 | 1st | Filler |
| Pelacor Conjurer | 2 | 2nd | Reflect Magic |
| Celestial Harpy | 2 | 3rd | Opportunity |
| Venari Crystalsmith | 4 | 4th | Tank Heal |
| Thunderbird | 3 | 5th | Flying and ranged |
| Crystal Jaguar | 4 | 6th | Thorns |
| Total Mana: | 18 |
My plan is to soul fiend up front because I want snipe to hit Pelacor Conjurer first if my opponent has a fast card. Besides that, crystal jaguar is up in the last spot for the thorns ability to counter any sneak damage. I have both magic reflect and thorns amplified by the ruleset. I have damage dealers and tank heal in the middle of my lineup to help me live longer.
Round 1

At first glance of my opponent's lineup, I think I have the advantage due to the low health melee monster on my opponent's side. The thorns themselves will kill a few of these cards even if they get an extra health from my opponent's summoner due to amplify.
Round 2

I managed to kill off three cards due to thorns before my Crystal Jaguar died. So it did its job. This match is pretty much won but there is always a chance I could lose if I miss too much.
Round 3

There is almost no chance of me losing because I have tank heal to extend the match and I am able to deal 2 damage per round. So it depends on whether or not I can land enough hits.

I won the match without much trouble a few turns later.
Conclusion
The battle this time around went exactly as I expected. The thorns worked out quite well to finish off those low health melee monsters and the amplify only helped me. With a low mana card, I was able to fill up my entire lineup so there was plenty of buffer for me.

What did you think of my match? Was there anything you would have done differently? I think it is quite interesting to see how different players use the same card.

Crystal Jaguar took out most of the melee opponents, I wonder why I am not prioritizing upgrading mine. I have a GF copy as well.
Yea. The thorns can come in quite helpful during those low mana matches
