Week 253 | My Splinterlands Art Contest Entry | Doctor Blight

For this week's card, I chose Doctor Blight. It is a very popular card for Hive artists! I see a lot of different styles and interpretations. It has that apocalyptic-pandemic vibe. 😆

Art Process

Frankly, there are a lot of similar poses and clothing references for this card. I assume it got its inspiration from plague doctor

Plague doctors practiced bloodletting and other remedies such as putting frogs or leeches on the buboes to "rebalance the humors." A plague doctor's principal task, besides treating people with the plague, was to compile public records of plague deaths. Source

Similar mask, hat, and clothing. I sketched first the character. I envision Doctor Blight in a dungeon paying a visit to the quarantined sick people. Since it is underground, it would be dark with little source of light. So the additions are the skull staff, lamp, necklace, and the design on the beak. Using a solid pencil, I drew the lineart. I have a few tries on the skull.

Starting with the base colors. I noticed that the clothing is black, and the inner clothing is dark brown. It has the same color as the hat. I gave the mask and the skull the same color of off-white gray. On another layer clipped on the base color, I chose a darker color for the shadowing to show the folds of the clothing, and also to show the belt cinched to the waist.

I gave highlights to the eyes and the metal part of the staff. I also added shadows on the skull and mask. Here, I already colored the lamp. Adding the beak's design, necklace, and buttons of the clothing. I made sure that the buttons are aligned and the same sizes.

The brick pattern is downloadable content from the Asset store. Originally, it is in the color orange, the typical brick. Since this is dark-themed art, I adjusted the color using hue and saturation. I edited the bricks a little so it does not look like a pattern like tiled pattern (IDK, hard to explain haha). Using the shape lines, I made the dungeon cell like this. After that, I airbrushed darkness on the left side, some parts of the wall and flooring.

I always put the light on the last process. I use Add Glow and airbrush for the light source on the lamp and on the glowing necklace. I also added hints of glow on the metal of the staff, eyes, and clothing. It might not be that noticeable but I put some yellow dots, similar to dust. Added noise monochrome on top of all layers and set on 10 percent opacity.
