Cliff diving and natural water slides/waterfalls in the Dominican Republic

Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti. Haiti lies to the west and the Dominican Republic is in the east. The island has an exciting history. The Dominican Republic is known for their love of baseball.

How to get there

The island of Hispaniola is in the Caribbean. It can be reached by airplane or boat. The roads in the Dominican Republic are a little chaotic as is typical for the Caribbean.
I arrived at the Dominican Republic on the last stop of a cruise. We docked at the relatively new Amber Cove dock near the city of Puerto Plata.

Things to do

On this trip a little over half of my party visited Damajagua. My cousin booked this tour https://www.viator.com/tours/Dominican-Republic/DAMAJAGUA-THE-27-WATERFALLS/d32-114989P2 on viator.com this tour is not for the faint of heart or for people with physical limitations. We did about an hour of moderate to strenuous hiking. This excursion included natural waterslides and cliff jumping with the larger jump being nearly 20 feet. This was the same cousin who booked the tour we did in Puerto Rico, I'm sensing a theme.

The cover photo for this post was the first jump that we did on this excursion. I was wearing a waterproof cell phone case on a lanyard which had done well on 2 prior excursions. Apparently getting the phone in and out of this case had ripped the side. When I got to the bottom of that first jump my "waterproof case" was full of water. I hadn't backed up my photos to the cloud in a long time and lost about 3 years worth of photos. Thankfully nobody was hurt and everyone had a good time on the excursion. At least everyone in my party. I saw someone too afraid to take that first jump (the stairway/ladder down looked way scarier than the jump). There have been times where 27 waterfall excursions were offered in this area. Our guide said that many of those waterfalls were dried up. I don't know if they're permanently dried up or if it changes seasonally.

Other things to do in the Puerto Plata vicinity

Those in my group who didn't go to Damajagua went to Monkeyland and they all seemed to have a good time. I don't know if the monkeys are native to Hispaniola.

Puerto Plata has a Christ statue that looks fairly similar to the one in Rio, but it is smaller. There is a tram available that takes you up the mountain and there are beautiful gardens to tour near the statue. I didn't see any excursions offered via the cruise ship or otherwise, but I've been up there on a previous trip and I think it was my favorite part of the trip.

I'm still new to the Pinmapple community, this is my fifth Pinmapple post. I do plan to share more posts when I'm able to travel in the future and I plan to use my own photos now that I have a new phone.

What sort of information do you like to see included in Pinmapple posts? I’m hoping to keep them fairly short and sweet. What do you think of my format for this post?

I hope this post has been helpful and informative. Thanks for reading and thanks for all the upvotes, reblogs, comments and follows.

Lastly, I'm hoping that this community will be interactive. I would love to hear your comments and considerations if you happen upon a post about someplace you've lived or visited. I'll try to do the same for you when I stumble onto a post about somewhere I love to visit.
