Poplar Bluff, MO Eclipse City

For those of you who have been living under a rock, there’s going to be a total solar eclipse in North America tomorrow. A solar eclipse happens when the earth’s moon passes between the earth and the sun. This is a total solar eclipse tomorrow meaning that the moon will completely block your view of the sun for those in this band.

Where is Poplar Bluff and how do I get there?

Poplar Bluff is in the middle of freaking nowhere, MO. You’ll need to get there by car. Poplar Bluff is a city of 16,000. They do have a small municipal airport and even boast a handful of commercial flights. This size airport mainly services small propeller driven planes. If you haven’t already booked your flight or parked your own small plane there, you’re too late. The airport will be full before you can arrive. Other small nearby airports will also be full. If you want to fly someplace nearby for this then you should look to larger cities like St Louis or Memphis.

Things to do

Watch the eclipse. The eclipse is on April 8 2024 and totality in Poplar Bluff is supposed to last 4 minutes. What’s an eclipse like? Your view of the sun will be completely blocked for 4 minutes but that doesn’t mean it gets completely dark. Being in the moon’s shadow doesn’t make it as dark as nighttime, there will be plenty of refracted light like when a cloud passes by. If you’re not watching for the eclipse then you may actually think that a cloud has passed by if you notice it. If you’re around insects or wildlife then you may notice them quiet briefly.

Where to eat

I ate at Lemonade House Grille. I tried the prickly pear lemonade and the gravel bar lemonade which has mango pineapple and coconut flavors. There was so much sugar that while the lemonade was not grainy it was thick and viscous.

I ate the orange beach tacos and I don’t even know the name of the burger I had. The tacos were good but the shrimp was more breading than shrimp. The burger was very unique. I saw the picture and asked what it was. She described it and may have said what it was called. It was topped with bacon and Cinnamon Toast Crunch and a sweet sauce. The bun was sweet and had cinnamon and sugar on top. It was as much a sweet treat as it was a burger. It was good and very unique. I finished off with a slice of lemon merengue pie which was very traditional and very tasty. The sides were also good. The fries came with fry sauce which was a pleasant surprise and the deep fried green beans came with a thick rich ranch sauce.
