EVASION & BACKFIRE

The Speed Equation

There are a certain amount of things to bear in mind when we look at evading attacks. One of which is the speed difference between the two monsters fighting.

I'll use my battle below as an example: my level six Naga Assassin has 6 speed, the opposing sneak attack monster is a level five Elven Cutthroat whose speed is reduced to 3 because of my summoner's -1 speed modifier. That gives us the following equation:

6 - 3 = 3 (Speed difference is then multiplied by 10%) therefore 3 x 10 = 30%

The Elven Cutthroat, being the slower monster, has a 30% chance of missing my Naga Assassin, the faster monster.

Backfire

Backfire is a new ability that was introduced with the Chaos Legion set. It basically means, if an enemy misses the particular Monster with an attack, that attacker takes 2 damage. It doesn't sound like much but if you're sporting a character with high speed and an ability like dodge or flying, then it can work quite nicely, especially in the rear rank where the sneak attacks come in. I really like putting my Naga Assassin there if I have a couple of mana points left over to try and return some damage.

The Battle

As already mentioned, the Elven Cutthroat, being the slower monster, has a 30% chance of missing my Naga Assassin, the faster monster. If you watch the match you'll see that the Cutthroat attacks my Assassin four times, only hitting once. Because of my Assassin's ability of Backfire (if an enemy misses this Monster with an attack, the attacker takes 2 damage), those three misses meant the Cutthroat actually ended up killing itself!

Other Evasion Modifiers

There are also other factors involved with evasion which give you additional chances to avoid attack and they are: Dodge gives you + 25% against melee and ranged attacks, Flying gives you + 25% (doesn't work against other flying monsters, magic attacks or if you get snared), Phase gives you + 25% against magic attacks, and if the enemy is Blinded you get + 15% chance to evade.

These all stack up as well, so you can see, if the right abilities are in play and your monster is considerably quicker than the enemy, you could end up with a 100% chance to evade incoming melee or ranged attacks.

Some Things You Just Can't Avoid!

It is worth while remembering though that certain rulesets/abilities/attacks will ignore all of these factors or effect the equations. For instance:

  • If your opponent has True Strike, then they won't miss you and will hit 100% of the time.

  • Dodge, Flying and Blindness won't effect you getting hit by a magic attack.

  • Reverse Speed where monsters with the lowest Speed attack first and have the highest chance of evading attacks.

  • An Enraged monster when hit will have its Speed increased by 50%.

  • Last Stand, where your monster is the only one left on your team alive, will also increase the monster's speed by 50%.

  • You cannot evade the damage from Redemption when it is activated (when the Monster dies, it does 1 damage to all enemy monsters) or from the effects of Blast (does additional damage to Monsters adjacent to the target Monster).

  • You cannot evade the damage done to you by Thorns or Return Fire.

And there you have it, that's Evasion in a nutshell! Hopefully you've found this useful. If you enjoyed my post and want to give Splinterlands a go, please use my referral link:
