In a sensational series opener, Bangladesh scripted the first T-20 win over New Zealand at Napier. Victory by five wickets, and a one-nil lead in the three-match T20I series was clinched for Bangladesh, who had their sights set on 135.

Litton Das anchored the chase in fine style, making an unbeaten 42 from 36 balls. All the lower order needed with Mahedi Hasan's important performance ensured that it was a comfortable win for Bangladesh.

Early breakthroughs for Shoriful Islam and variations by Mustafizur Rahman contained New Zealand within their opportunities. Mahedi Hasan really did with night and day, starting New Zealand's batting collapse before contributing well to the chase.

This victory is also the first time Bangladesh have overcome New Zealand in T20Is on their soil, as well as being a maiden defeat for newcomers to today's ground.

From this evening the series moves to Mount Maunganui for two more matches, and both teams will hope that today's close T20 encounter can retain some of its intensity.
