If you have $, you can rent a lot of good cards with relatively low dec prices. When I was grinding from Novice - Bronze II I was mostly using death and water cards available after buying spellbook. Should be easy enough to level up fast.

If you're looking for less of a deep dive intro to the ins-and-outs around Hive/Splinterlands/etc, you should check out a few of the posts written by @marcuswhal, he has a great Beginners budget deck building guide as well as more recent examples of decks he's used to climb up the ranks :)
