Let's Talk Tournaments

Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening,

I love tournaments. If anything I think tournaments are the motivation behind wanting to invest more into my deck. The ladder in bronze and silver just seems to be rife with bots and that has its drawbacks. One of those drawbacks is fairly predictable play and I can't help but think if I want to get better as a Splinterlands player, I need to play people.

What Splinterland have done with tournaments so far is amazing, if you have the SPS staked you have zero downsides, at the moment. I took to punt to get SPS needed to enter the Noob Kolbold Novice/Bronze 600 or 1200 respectively. I played three so far, I have won one and earned 2-7 SPS in the others. When I won I grinned like the goat who got the catnip, but this isn't the point of this post.

I realised that there are people who might be good players, great players, even, but don't have the money to invest into the SPS at the moment and can't stake enough to get into these tourneys. What are we going to do about these people? I'm not bitching and I just thinking out loud, to all three readers.

That's when it hit me like Will Smith, I can create tournaments they can get into and if they win they get SPS to stake and get into even more tournaments! To quote Drake

"We started at the bottom now we're here!"

...which is still the bottom, but we are here.

I know what you are thinking, 'that is a koalaty idea', and it is, thank you. However, I don't have the funds to start a massive tournament with huge SPS prizes, so I'm going to have to start small, looking at the tournament types, Sit and Go's will fit the bill.

If we are creating new tournaments we might as well make them fun right? The way I see it there are a few things we can toy around with within the format;

  • Leagues
  • Allowed Cards (No Legendaries, Modern, Wild)
  • Entry Fee
  • Prize Breakdown
  • Speed (how quickly you need to pick your line up)
  • Amount of Power needed

There might be more but this already is giving me some ideas of what we could toy around with;

Leagues/Amount of Power Needed

These are pretty obvious and we will start in the Novice and Bronze bracket with minimal power but I would like to expand if we can get this thing going.

Allowed Cards

We can make the tournaments hard or easy mode with the allowance of Legendaries. I think it could also be fun or interesting to only allow Chaos and Alpha cards, call it Old and New. Beta, Untamed, Dice middle child syndrome.

Entry Fee

This at the moment I can't play around with as I have to front all the prizes while setting up the tournament and honestly, I don't have much spare cash. However, I would like to make a tournament called 'Pennies for Bennies' where the entrance fee is tiny but the potential prizes are sick. I mean Clove and a few others already do this but I want to give back to the community.

Prize Breakdown

So the first tournament will be fairly vanilla in its prize structure but we could have lots of fun with this. I'm thinking Double Bubble, where those who finish in the top half double their entry fee or Uno Reverse where first place and last place (of the prize payouts) have the same payout. I think this could be lots of fun to experiment with.

Speed

I think this could fit in nicely to a 'Hard Mode' where you have like a minute or thirty seconds to pick your line up...I can already feel the stress.

Those are just my initial ideas but I would love to hear from others and see what kind of tournaments others would like to play in, so, if you have a comment hit me up below or send me a DM on Twitter.

So here is the first Sit and Go I have created, it only has 16 places but please if you are interested then go join, and give me feedback.

And if I don't see you, Good Afternoon, Good Evening and Good Night.
