Gods Unchained: Divine Order Intro and Weekend Ranked Meta Report

Good day all!

Today's post is going to be the first entry to a new series that will be covering Gods Unchained and the weekly meta during the weekend ranked events.

What is Gods Unchained?

Gods Unchained is an NFT based traditional tactical TCG developed by Immutable X out of Australia. It is most similar to Hearthstone and is currently directed by former Magic the Gathering visionary Chris Clay.

The general premise includes building a deck of 30 cards at different mana costs which are themed to a selection of 6 playable Gods. Each God has a set of 3 powers which can be selected from at the start of each match.

The game runs on the ETH mainnet however transactions are performed on the Immutable Layer 2 network which is feeless and does not require GAS to perform transactions.

Play to Earn

Currently, Gods Unchained has two primary features which classify it under the play to earn catagory: Fusing and Weekend Rewards.

1. Fusing

Fusing at this time is currently not active so it is debatable if it really counts. Generally, the way it works is that two base level cards can be combined with flux, an in-game currency, and GODS tokens (release date pending) to create an NFT version of the card. These base level cards as well as flux are attainable by simply playing the game. For each match, win or lose, players will earn experience which will unlock free 'core' packs. These 'core' packs contain 5 of the base level cards each. This is the feature that most players will see as the true play to earn function however I'd argue the second is more important.

2. Weekend Rewards

Every weekend the general ranked play mode turns into a free to enter tournament. During this tournament play, your win rate over the first 25 games will net you some rewards. Rewards are increased based on your in-game rank and generally the higher the win rate the greater the reward. For lower win-rates rewards are limited to 'core' packs however at 11 wins or more, expansion packs are awarded. This is key because expansion packs are already minted when you obtain them which means no Fusing is required and they can instantly be sold on the market. Alternatively, they can also be used to build stronger decks. Check out GU's official post over Weekend Ranked events including the prize charts here.

Ranked Meta Report

Favored Decks

Now that we have gone through the basics of Gods Unchained, lets get to my primary reason for starting this series, the Ranked Meta Report. Divine Order is Gods Unchained's latest expansion and today marks the end of the first ranked event with expansion cards on the field.

Prior to release the top 8 decks was typically weighted towards Warrior and Nature with rare appearences from the the other gods. As you can see in the top deck chart below, that meta has already had a clear shift with Nature falling from grace and Mage and Deception decks becoming highly relevant. That said, Warrior still seems to be the dominant God at 50% for this weekend with Vikings taking over.

Diving into the top warrior deck its no surprise to see Thunder Caller and Rolling Thunder being used heavily. During the player test environment these cards were called out as being incredibly powerful and they remain so going into the live environment.

Currently the top warrior deck has been designed by player Vyona and has an overall win rate of 78.1% in Mythic which is incredible.

Looking into the build it sticks to a traditional mana curve, heavy with 1 and 2 cards and tapering off at 2 6 mana Rolling Thunders. Not surprisingly this deck is primarily composed of Divine Order cards however does include a few of the old Warrior meta cards such as Enduring Shield and Pyramid Warden. Three cards in particular however have garnered a lot of attention from players: Rolling Thunder, Thunder Caller, and Revered Seer.

The trend is that if a Warrior player is able to get to 6 mana and then frenzy playing a single Rolling Thunder will generally end the game. Rolling Thunder allows a player to effectively spend 6 mana to get 4 Thunder Callers on the board which will start at 3/3. At the end of the turn, each Thunder Caller will then buff each other resulting in 4 7/7 cards at the cost of 6 mana. Without a significant board wipe, that is the end of the match. That said, it can be difficult for Warrior to keep cards on the board at this point given the amount of control options many decks have in the Divine Order set.

Top Win % cards

I also take a look at the highest win rates of all the cards each week and what I found for this weekend seriously surprised me. For 1, Rolling Thunder was not in the top 10 list and 2, only 1 Divine Order card made it (albeit a legendary). The cards on the list are primarily Genesis cards which was the very first set released. This tells me that the developers are genuinely trying to ensure old cards stay relevant in competitive decks when designing new expansions.

If you would like to take a look into the meta data yourself feel free to explore the GU Decks website. It is a great place for new players to dip their toes into the game and get an idea of which cards make up a good deck.

Post Tax

Those that follow me are aware I also adhere to the internet tax, ie pet pictures. For today's tax, I present to you resentful Nobu. Since it is almost snow sports season, the Snowboard has come out from storage for a good cleaning and rewaxing. I had only left my board bag open and unattended for a split second and of course Nobu opted to protest the thought of my being gone on weekends again.

Shame I stopped playing Gods Unchained a while back. Hearthstone/Magic style just ain't my thing.

Yeah, it def seems like traditional card games have lost some playerbase due to how long each match is. I still find that the greater level of strategy needed to build proper decks to be enjoyable though. Its almost to a point where I like theory crafting card combos more than playing Magic/Yugioh etc.
