About 7 days ago, I wrote about the first cards from the community SET called “The Arena Vanguard,” in which I shared some brief impressions of the cards (Jolius Blasy and Ratbound Corsair), but I’m going to change that approach a bit to share in detail what I think about these cards and how they’ll affect gameplay and strategies in the game. Of course, I’ll eventually post another entry about the first cards so you can understand their actual use on the battlefield; however, today I’ll start with the card called “Gorm the Vengeful” and will be writing a separate post for each one.

This post will be very different from the one I wrote 7 days ago, which you can read by clicking HERE; It will also be different because I want to explain their abilities and stats in greater detail and how these cards can be positioned on the battlefield—all to assess their true market value, even though I’ve already discussed and explained how you can currently obtain these cards.

So, if you want to know everything about “Gorm the Vengeful,” you’ll have to read to the end to understand how to use it and how it affects the current Splinterlands METAGAME:

All About “Gorm the Vengeful”

As you can see in the image, it’s a very eye-catching card in terms of its design, which—as I mentioned in the first post—is somewhat different from the illustrations we usually see from the Splinterlands team, however, that doesn’t mean they look bad—on the contrary, this slightly more realistic design, if we can call it that, looks incredible, and this card’s characteristics reflect the Splinter it belongs to, which is “Death.” In fact, if you look at his purple eyes and some other details in that same color, plus his attire, you can tell he’s a warrior of darkness. But we’ll talk about that shortly because the goal is to understand his stats, abilities, and his role on the battlefield.

Statistics

  • Mana Cost: The first thing to note is its mana cost; I think this is the most important aspect of a card, and based on this alone, we can determine the types of battles in which we might play it. For example, this card requires 10 mana to play, which is high—not low—so battles involving it are more demanding and less versatile.

  • Attack Power: At its maximum level, it has +3 “Melee” attack points, so we know that its attack is more physical. In fact, this is something its design doesn’t make clear from the start, and later on we’ll see how this type of attack is crucial for optimizing its use.

  • Shield and Health: This card has +2 shield points and 7 health points, so it can be played as a backup tank or, alternatively, in a mid-line position, since that’s where we can make the most of its abilities on the battlefield.

  • Speed: It has +3 speed points, which is somewhere in the middle—not low, but not very high either. However, for a card with its stats, this is pretty good, because even though it’s clearly a heavy monster, it can still move at a moderate pace.

Detailed Abilities:

image.png

  • Opportunity: As I mentioned earlier, the way we play this card during an attack is crucial to using it correctly, since, under this battle rule, the cards with the fewest life points on the opponent’s side of the field are at risk because “Gorm the Vengeful” will use this ability to target the cards with the fewest life points.

  • Magic Reflect: This card has the ability to reflect any magical attack it receives, and although it takes the damage, it can redirect that damage to the opponent's card that launched the attack. This is great because it provides defense against this type of attack, which is usually a nightmare for cards that rely on melee attacks.

  • Affliction: This ability causes cards attacked by this card to have a 50% chance of contracting “Affliction,” which prevents that card from regenerating its health points through abilities such as “Heal,” “Tank Heal,” and “Triage.” It’s a great ability—there isn’t much synergy with other abilities—but the truth is, it’s one of my favorite abilities for annoying my opponent.

Analysis of How to Use “Gorm the Vengeful” in the “Battlefield”

This is a somewhat versatile card, since its abilities themselves don’t have much synergy. However, when it comes to “Death Splinter,” it does have some synergy with “Affliction,” for example, which is to be expected, since this element focuses on countering many of the abilities our opponents typically use—such as healing abilities— but, in my opinion, this card’s abilities don’t have much synergy unless we can combine it with an “Archon” that boosts its attack, or, failing that, one that can amplify the damage it reflects back using “Magic Reflect.”

image.png

  • Optimal Positioning: Since he has the Opportunity ability, the idea is to protect him, so his position should be between the 3rd and 4th slots; however, when you have no other options and notice that the battle is centered around magic attacks, you can use him as a temporary tank.

  • Some rules to keep in mind: To play in a way that gives us an advantage—such as under rules like “Enraged Warriors”—we can take advantage of the fact that the attack order works in our favor because we have a physical attack. Additionally, “Explosive Weaponry” can be an incredible way to amplify that damage to cards adjacent to the target.

Final Thoughts

Of course, it’s a matter of testing these cards on the battlefield. I’m not saying they can’t be useful, but it’s not easy to determine their optimal use if their abilities don’t work well together. Still, as I said, they can be useful in different scenarios—for example, the two rule examples I mentioned.

If you have any questions about this card or comments about its gameplay, I'll be reading them and responding.

See you on the "Battlefield"
