Issues and Proposals Regarding Rentals in Splinterlands [ES-EN]

About 22 days ago, I shared the first post in a series that begins by discussing the cards that defined the game across its various sets—that is, those super-powerful cards that everyone talked about whenever a new set was released. In that first part, I started by discussing the cards from the “Alpha” set, focusing on the cards known as “Chromatic Dragon” and “Gold Dragon,” which, for me, were undoubtedly the most influential in that set. Of course, this is open to debate, since we could perhaps add one of my favorite cards, “Lightning Dragon,” to that pair, but I believe these two were the most impactful, especially since Dragon Splinter was the most influential of all back then—something that isn’t quite the case today.
However, the time has come to highlight the cards from the “Beta” edition—cards that are practically identical to those from “Alpha” but with some changes to the card borders and the addition of certain new cards— but what I’d say was even more influential during that era was the introduction of “Neutral” cards, which to this day are among the most valuable cards in the entire game because there are no restrictions on playing them—unless a modifier prevents it. However, in this post, we’ll look at one or two of these “Neutral” cards that, in my opinion, completely defined the launch of the “Beta” edition—which essentially kicked off many of the changes in the game and fueled its growth.
If you want to read the first part, I'll leave a link right below this, but most importantly, if you're new to the game or—as a veteran player—want to refresh your memory on those cards that were so important in past expansions, you need to read all these posts all the way through. So, let's see what these cards are.

The Splinterlands Boom in 2019. Beta Edition

Of course, before sharing the cards, I like to provide some context for each release, and this was one of the most important in the history of what Splinterlands is today, but, to start from the beginning, I think I mentioned in the previous post that about 300,000 packs were released in 2018 during the Alpha phase—though that was very few—so for the “Beta,” about 900,000 packs were released, making this the game’s first major sale in a single release, although that wasn’t the only thing it brought us, as I already mentioned.
Although I already mentioned that they introduced “Neutral” cards, they also introduced new “Epic and Legendary Summoners” that, to be honest, completely broke the game—both because of their in-game utility (since they were extremely powerful and very difficult to counter) and, even better than that, these cards had an astronomical value, as they functioned as a sort of Kickstarter “pre-sale,” which also served as a fundraising event, introducing cards such as Archmage Arius and Prince Julian.

NOTE: Although I could provide even more context, I don’t want to go on too long here, since I could certainly talk about a lot of cards, but I’ve chosen the ones that I felt were the most iconic in the game. I could mention many more cards, but given the pace of this post, I’ll probably split the BETA section into two parts, because we can’t skip over the four “Legendary” summoners, who are still very powerful even today.

The Most Powerful Card in the BETA Edition – (HYDRA)

Reasons: HYDRA was for a long time the most powerful and valuable card in the game; defeating it was nearly impossible unless you played another HYDRA or pulled off a pretty good combo that could stop it, but the odds were very low back then, In fact, it was practically immortal, and since it could be played with any deck, the advantage players had when using it was unfair. In fact, they had to change its stats because the mana cost to play it was too low, its health was too high, and its speed defied all logic—so it was clearly the best card at that time.
His Stats: I’ve already given you a sneak peek at some of his stats; specifically, I’ll explain what he had. For example, in his first version, he had the following: (6 mana points, 4 attack and speed points, and 11 health points.) Now, however, it has (7 mana points, 4 attack and speed points, and 10 health points). Although these changes might seem insignificant, the reality is that they had a major impact on the card, since “Heal” helps it regenerate a certain percentage of its health, but with the reduction, it healed fewer points, which made it much easier to defeat. Now, with the mana point—even though it may also seem minor—the reality is that it significantly reduced the card’s viability in many strategies.
Her Abilities: This is where this card really shines, because while her stats are very powerful, what truly made her an unstoppable and immortal offensive machine were her abilities. The first of these is “Heal,” which regenerates his health points and made it very difficult to defeat him. Next is “Thorns,” which deals damage to any monster that manages to physically hit this card—a skill that works very well in tandem with “Retaliate,” which has a 50% chance to automatically strike back at the unit. And the crown jewel is “Trample”—if you manage to eliminate a card that turn, it automatically attacks the next one, allowing it to chain together multiple kills in the blink of an eye.

Final Thoughts

Although practically everyone has forgotten about this card by now, at first it was one of those cards that was always on your mind—you just wanted to earn it through rewards and hope you’d be lucky enough to get it, because its market value was quite high (and still is), but there was a lot of demand for it, since the best players of the time would come back from behind in matches using only this card. It was undoubtedly an icon of its time.
The idea for this post was to cover several cards, but that didn’t happen, because HYDRA and its story really deserved a post all to itself. So, for those of you who didn’t know the story, here it is. I hope you enjoyed it and look forward to the next parts, because we’re not done with the “Beta” edition yet.
See you on the "Battlefield"
