Every time a new “Conflict” card is announced, I like to jump in right away to see what’s new with it. Although this new card won’t be released until August 27, we already have images and information on how it works, what it’ll bring to the table, and whether it’s really worth considering on the battlefield. Of course, as we can all see, the answer is pretty obvious, but even for those who might be more focused on what the AI has in store and are living under a rock using “Claude,” I’m here to explain to newcomers how these “Conflicts” work.

But, getting down to business, the new card is called “EL JEFE” in Spanish, which is kind of interesting—in all the time I’ve been playing the game, there’s never been a card with a Spanish name, which in itself makes it intriguing, Also, as is customary in this type of post, we’ll take a look at the card—what it looks like, what stats it brings, what kind of abilities it has or grants, and how this might influence gameplay in light of the current meta in Splinterlands, which has been very dynamic lately, thanks to all those recent updates and cards that have been arriving with “The Arena Vanguard” and others. Although “Visions of Verico” is exclusive to the Lands, I’d like to mention them because they’re great.

So, if you want to know how “EL JEFE” will perform on the battlefield, join me as we explore what this new card has to offer and, from there, determine its potential value on the open market:

EL JEFE – New Archon of the Splinter of Life

image.png

Okay, let’s start with its appearance—I have to say it looks amazing. I like it, though maybe not quite enough to call it “EL JEFE,” but it certainly commands respect. Plus, it’s a kind of armored “Reptilian Turtle”; it looks more like a monster that can attack than an “Archon,” but that’s another story. The colors and the way it looks are really well done—I have no complaints, since a big part of why I like these kinds of games, especially Splinterlands, is because of the card designs. It feels great to collect these cards with stunning designs that just keep getting better and better. Although, as I said, I feel like to truly deserve the name “EL JEFE,” I was expecting something more—but I suppose the “lore” you can read in the official Splinterlands post will explain a bit more about that.

Now, we’ve already seen a little bit about what it looks like, but let’s get down to the real business—what really matters to us: What can this card do on the battlefield? To answer that, we’ll first need to analyze its stats and abilities. So, next, we’ll look at exactly that to determine what we might see in battles and whether it’s worth participating in “Conflicts”—though, to be clear, it’s always worth it: you’re gaining something of value by putting your assets to work, so nothing at this point is a waste.

image.png

His Statistics

At this point, we can already see and/or determine the value of the card, and it's very easy to do—I'll explain why below:

  • Splinter and Rarity: To start, we can see that this card belongs to the “Splinter of Life,” and if you’ve read my posts about the “Strengths and Playstyles” of the different Splinters, you’ll understand why this card fits perfectly into this element. On the other hand, its rarity is “Legendary.” In fact, all the cards from this conflict that have been released—and those yet to come—will share this same rarity.

  • Summoning Mana Cost: We can already see a lot of details here, since THE BOSS has a +3 mana cost—a fairly low number for a “Legendary” card. So, we can already get a sense of its value: a Legendary card that’s incredibly versatile—and given that it’s an “Archon”—will be quite valuable, in my opinion.

What are his abilities, and what makes him special?

This is where we’ll truly be able to see if the card is weak or, on the contrary, has the potential to become one of the best “Archons” released so far from the “Conflicts” set—though I don’t want to disparage the cards that have been released previously, since I’m one of those who believe that any card has a use under certain gameplay conditions, some more than others, but that’s how the game’s balance works. But without further ado, let’s see what “EL JEFE” has to offer:

image.png

EL JEFE Abilities

image.png

  • Bloodline Dominion: All current Archons that fall under the “Arcana Conclave” framework possess this ability, which allows them to summon cards outside of their original Splinter—which, in the case of “EL JEFE,” is “Life”— but the good thing is that this mechanic helps you summon cards within the same “Bloodline”—in this case, the one called “Tortisian.”

  • Soul Siphon: This is where EL JEFE proves why he’s called that, since this ability is actually pretty BROKEN, and I’ll explain why. Basically, the way it works is that if we have a card on our side of the field that’s “Exhausted,” it “Self-Revives” with 100% of its shield—which is great—and 50% of its health points, rounded down. On the other hand, any magical debuffs it had are removed, and it regains its buffs. Now, another thing that happens with this ability—we could call it a secondary effect—is that the card with the highest health on our side of the field is inflicted with “Exhaustion,” reducing its health to 50% (rounded up).

  • Archon's Tactic: The best part about this is that we can apply this last ability to up to 2 cards on our side of the field or on the opponent's side of the field, but obviously they must be our own cards. This means we'll have 2 cards with "Exhaustion," and therefore they'll be revived throughout the entire battle.

IMPORTANT: While the second effect might seem like a weakness, I don't see it that way, since if we don't have any units, our strongest card will have exhaustion and the first effect will apply—so we could have the loop fully set up using just that ability.

Final Thoughts

For me, this is an incredibly useful card. Of course, it’s not perfect—just because exhausted cards are revived throughout the battle doesn’t mean we’ve won the battle, however, we can distract the opponent with this while focusing our “offensive” elsewhere. That’s why it depends on how we put together our combo and/or strategy. This is just a matter of practice, but we won’t be able to really see how it works because the card isn’t officially in the game yet, so we’ll have to wait until “September.”

See you on the "Battlefield"

The truth is that all these new summoners bring fresh strategies and ways of thinking. I liked this one, you can put 2 units there, quite good, that self-resurrect, not bad.
