What Are the Splinters' Strengths or Play Styles? (Fire and Water Splinters) [ES-EN]

One interesting aspect of Splinterlands that I haven’t talked about in quite a while is the Splinters and the playstyles associated with each element, because yes, depending on the element you use, there’s a distinct playstyle associated with each one—though of course it also depends on various factors, such as the “Combat Rules,” which offer a unique tactical approach that requires us to understand them perfectly so we can use each one at the right time and place.

Of course, to understand this, we need to know how the “Splinters and/or Elements”—which are essentially the same thing—work, and this is where we’ll explore their respective “Strengths and Playstyles.” This will help you determine not only which one to use when facing a specific scenario, but also how to use the right abilities in combination with rules or modifiers so you aren’t caught off guard. Of course, this is all about practice—you need to play and try everything out so you can become experts.

So, if you want to know and/or learn about the Splinters and each one’s playstyle, you need to read this post all the way through. As I mentioned over a year ago, I talked about this before, but now is the time to refresh this information, because there are surely many new players, and besides, things have changed since then.

Analysis of the Splinters' Strengths and Playstyles – Fire and Water Splinters

Okay, in case you didn't know, each Splinter or Element in the game offers a different way to play; they aren't all alike and don't offer the same gameplay, since the idea is that they counterbalance each other to create balance in the game, However, if you manage to handle this correctly, learn how it works, and also familiarize yourself with the card modifiers and abilities, you’ll always be one step ahead of your opponents—especially if they’re new players.

The important thing about all this information is that you find something that suits your playing style, so let's get to it:

Fire Splinter

The Fire Splinter is fairly easy to use, since its main purpose is to apply brute force—something more physical—which means it prioritizes “melee” attacks.

  • Strength: Its main strength is that its physical damage is quite high, and with the help of certain abilities—or even some Archons—you can gain power and speed bonuses to dominate the battlefield.

  • Playstyle: There are two ways to play this Splinter deck. The first is to focus on the center lane—specifically the “Tank”—and proceed in that order, or to use abilities like “Sneak” or rely on rules that help this type of attack gain momentum and build on that, since the goal in this latter scenario is to destroy the opponent’s backline.

  • Key Abilities: This is very relative; there aren't any specific skills you can use to maximize performance, but it's very clear which ones help make "Melee" attacks the priority and more successful—for example, "Ambush," "Sneak," "Enrage," and "Inspire." Although there may be several others.

Water Splinter

This is one of my favorite Splinters, since it offers pretty good versatility that combines powerful magical attacks with units that also have melee attacks—or, quite simply, many of them have good speed, which gives them both offense and defense very easily. In short, you can dodge attacks while using that speed to strike before your opponent does. With that in mind, let’s see how the rest stacks up:

image.png

  • Strengths: As I mentioned, many or some of these units have good speed, so in a way—and on many occasions—you’ll be able to control the turn order. You’ll also have magic damage that bypasses defenses—in this case, the “Shield”—and the ability to evade, which gives you some defense and time to attack.

  • Playstyles: The ideal strategy here is to take advantage of how flexible the “Water Splinter” can be. The idea is to act first and have enough speed so that our magical attacks strike directly and bypass defenses. In short, the goal is to have a strong magical offense—preferably across the entire team, except for the tank, who might be physically resilient—and plenty of speed, although this depends on the rules in effect at the time.

  • Key Abilities: Ideally, we should support the versatility I’ve been discussing. For example, if we already have a strong offense and speed, we can boost them further—either by playing an Archon, which increases our magic power or speed, or perhaps any support card that helps in that regard. It’s probably a good idea to have a support card with abilities like “Triage,” “Tank Heal,” or “Heal.” All of this is to protect our cards, even though speed helps us evade physical and ranged attacks above all else—though we must pay close attention to the rules.

NOTE: I'll leave it at that for now, because otherwise this post will go on forever—there are still other Splinters left to analyze— however, it’s important to note that, while Fire and Water aren’t exactly the strongest in my opinion, they do have their chances to shine depending on how we use them. Generally, what drives these kinds of decisions are the modifiers and/or battle rules—something that won’t change—but a key part of being effective is choosing the right Splinter for your playstyle.

Final Thoughts

Stay tuned for my next post, because I’ll be sharing my analysis of the rest of the Splinters. Next up will be “Earth and Life,” two of the most powerful and interesting elements that have been gaining ground in the game. However, it all depends on the META as well. Let’s remember that while elements are important, we also have “Lineages,” which can change the outlook.

So, stay tuned, and see you in the next post. If you have any questions, leave a comment.

See you on the "Battlefield"
