$224.99 vs $1097.59 - When $$ can't buy the win!

$224.99 vs $1097.59 When $$ can't buy the win..png

Today I have been reminded (many times, mostly through my losses) that sometimes, the big fancy cards in my deck (and, the ones with the biggest dollar figures attached to them) are actually not the best card for the battle. It's always a sobering lesson, right?

Today then, I want to share a battle which could quite rightly be described as a David v Goliath! And here it is:

Right off the bat, you can see the difference - as my opponent plays a LORD ARIANTHUS (A card I love!) and the legendary Untamed summoner, Yodin (A card I think is OK, but I don't love). In comparison, you can see that my line-up is made up with 6 Chaos Legion cards, and just the one Untamed.

It made me start to think about CASH - and the no frills option. Before we get into the battle, let's add up the spend

My Team:
Tarsa $85
Radiated Scorcher $2.70
Antoid Platoon $12.98
Radiated Brute $16
Serpentine Spy $83.90
Uraeus $6.53
Chaos Agent $33.88

85+2.70+12.98+16++83.90+6.53+33.88=
A total team of $240.99!

In contrast, my opponent is playing a far more expensive team, headlined by Yodin:

Yodin $767.85
Lord Arianthus $122
GF Goblin Shaman $69.89
Scorch Fiend $4.86
GF Furious Chicken $112
Fire Bettle $17.99
GF Lava Spider $3

767.85+122+69.89+4.86+112+17.99+3 =
a team total of 1097.59

image.png

Ok - so with the battle scene set, we have $240.99 vs 1097.59!

At the end of Round 1, you can see that both sides have taken some hits. I have been able to knock out my opponent's SCORCH FIEND, and have significantly weakened the LAVA SPIDER and LORD ARIANTHUS. To get to this point, I have taken some losses - by CHAOS AGENT, RADIATED SCORCHER have both been dropped, and my URAEUS has lost his armour. Game on!

image.png

And then Round 2 was an opportunity for my team to get on top; I was able to knock out the LORD ARIANTHUS with my Radiated Brute, and then my Antoid Platoon did a single hit kill on the Goblin Shaman, while the SERPENTINE SPY took out the LAVA spider.

As we move into Round 2 ten, my Radiated Brute took the first hit to drop the FURIOUS CHICKEN, promoting an archer to the TANK position where he will not be able to get off an attack, leading to a dominant victory being recorded.

So then, in reviewing the battle - it seemed to me that one card stood out as man of the match, the ANTOID PLATOON, who, by the end of the battle had 7 health! That was more than he started with, let's take a closer look at this guy:

Right off the bat, for a Level 8 (max for GOLD LEAGUE that I played in) you can see that this little card knows how to pack a punch, as he starts with 2 melee attack, 2 speed, 3 armour and 4 health. It's worth being mindful though, that TARSA gives him +1 melee and +1 health to make this guy far more determined out front in that tank position.

Where this card really shines though, is his SHIELD ability which reduces melee and arrow damage that he takes, and the SCAVENGER ability - which gives him +1 health every time a card on either my team, or my opponent's team dies. You see then, as I lost some early cards, I was able to get my card to grow its health - likewise, as my opponent's cards dropped. This meant this card was always going to be a difficult proposition for my opponent to deal with, unless he played a magic attack.

For the sake of $12.98 then - it's fair to say, that this guy stood out particularly against the much more fancied Yodin, who at $767, you'd hope to win!

Evaluation:
In looking at this battle, I was making the point that sometimes cash doesn't equal wins - this is obviously not true, and in a big mana battle, I know I'd prefer some of the more expensive eye candy cards, but what I wanted to point out was that there are battles when those fancy cards are not helpful, and in fact, will probably make you lose. I experienced this in my brawls today, losing some tough matches, and then when I seen it in action in this ranked battle - well, it just goes to show, play the ruleset, not the card!

I think, the guy might have rented that Yodin though, but I do understand you had to rate it. Currently, the Yodin is damn expensive. There are line ups where the cards I'm using to compete is barely 150$ and someone else is playing with a 700$ deck and I manage to beat them, sometimes I still think tactics is important as much as money.

I had some crappy brawl battles this week, playing Llama/Yodin Llama/Quora combos, ended up losing to better teams suited to the ruleset - generally, mana battles around 20-30 where it just doesn't seem to work to play the legendary summoners. That said, it's hard not to put them in the line-up sometimes - but a hard lesson to continually learn.

Hope you're well

Yes, ruleset is another thing. I think some people have sophisticated decks, they find it difficult to compete in small rulesets, this is often how small deckers emerges victorious sometimes.

Hope you're well

Thanks a lot, I am.

It's really no use having expensive cards if you don't know when or how to use them. A more expensive deck is not a guarantee of victory, although it has some advantage.
Thanks for sharing.

Nice fight. Sometimes, just playing according to the rule set just works out better and that antoid platoon is a beast. I have lost quite a few times when that scavenger kicks in.

Me too; often though it's that tricky Dr Blight with its scavenger that ruins my hopes of winning battles ;)

I sometimes think I should've sold my Yodin Zaku when it was worth $10k. As more cards come out, I think it's definitely less powerful than it used to be. It can still be really useful, though. It's all about the lineup overall.

Your team may have been even more powerful with a card like Yodin, it's hard to say.

I feel like Almo has kind of replaced Lord Arianthus in a lot of ways. I ended up buying an Almo card recently because I feel like it's very important to be competitive and renting it was costing a fortune.

It will be interesting to see how things shake out next year when Untamed is only available in Wild battles.
