I really think the CHAOS LEGION cards are all awesome in their own ways, some are of course more under-rated than others, and others obviously have more utility than others. One of those 'lost' cards which is not always appreciated is the RIVER NYMPH.

The truth is, I love a magic attacker, and this card is a rather good MAGIC card for your line-up as he only costs 4 mana, but targets for +2 magic! That's pretty impressive - and this is certainly a card I got to MAX early on, because it is impressive with its skills also.

  1. Cleanse - this is essential in a poison match as it takes the poison from your tank! As well as any other negative effects.
  2. Amplify - this is great when you play a THORNS or MAGIC REFLECT card as it will maximise the returned damage.
  3. Swiftness - this skill is great, as WATER splinter cards are really strong and fast, so additional speed is even better as early speed can often lead to early kills and a good advantage to start the game.

That said, I won't get access to SWIFTNESS in today's battle, as I wanted to play in the WILD league so I could access a LORD ARANTHUS in order to really demonstrate how awesome RIVER NYMPH's amplify is.

From an investment point of view then, you're probably wondering what this card would set you back - and the truth is, at 11 cents per card, you could max this guy out for about $12 - all up, that's a bargain, as the card is fairly cheap, but because it is a RARE card, you only need to combine 115 of them to max it out. In total, there are currently just over 99,000 of this card in circulation. Over time as we continue to see them combined, it stands to reason that the price of this card will trend up as demand starts to strip supply from the market.

So all I needed then was to find the right battle to put RIVER NYMPH to work - and I did that easily by finding a POISON ruleset:

Here's the line-up I played:

  1. Kelya Frendul - let's face it, this guy is a fantastic summoner, as he is able to give you speed and armour and I was really happy to send this guy to war - in order to get the upper hand with speed.
  2. Lord Aranthus - out front I wanted Lord Aranthus, you see, his MAGIC REFLECT and THORNS will hopefully do a lot of damage this game, as RIVER NYMPH will AMPLIFY all damage that he reflects. This is key in this battle as it will take health from back-line accounts and make them vulnerable to early poisoning.
  3. Merdaali Guardian - while this card isn't going to do any damage, his function in this battle will be to keep the LORD ARANTHUS alive - he won't be poisoned, due to the CLEANSE, so I hope to kepe him alive to really do his thing. In that way, this Guardian works in synergy with the RIVER NYMPH.
  4. Angelic Mandarin - this guy is useful with +2 arrows, but he also is good for longevity as he has 6 health - but where you also get advantage from, is his TRIAGE skill, which will heal a back-line account for +2 health each round, effectively negating the effect of the poison. That's pretty impressive from a 3 mana card.
  5. I then played the RIVER NYMPH, positioning him with protection in order to allow him to stay alive to CLEANSE and AMPLIFY. In that regard, he is set to do that job!
  6. The Hardy Blowfish then features in my line-up - this card is just a back-line defense for my RIVER NYMPH, BUT - and this is a strategic BUT - as the poison will kill him immediately in this battle, and in doing so, will give my Dr Blight additional health to protect him in Round 2.
  7. I then finish off the team with Dr Blight; sure, the poison will hurt him, but he will gain health each round to protect himself.

End of Round 1:

This was a good round for me - as my RIVER NYMPH used her AMPLIFY to really do some solid damage to that back-line up. This was important as ultimately, it would be the DJINN OSHANNUS with high health that would be a threat in this game, along with the Dr Blight. By hurting the Dr Blight early, and keeping mine safe - IF it came down to Blight vs Blight, I would win with that advantage. Thanks River!

End of Round 2:
In this round, the first POISONS hit the board - and this took a lot of health off of the board. This led to my LORD ARANTHUS and MERADALI GUARDIAN both being picked up - promoting my ANGELIC MANDARIN to the tank poison. Fortunately, his high health will continue to protect my Dr Blight - and, while my round wasn't great, where I am in a good poison is that my opponent is also on the verge of losing his DJINN. This is really a close battle, and may well end in the Dr Blight showdown.

End of Round 3:
This round was really a turning point for me, as I lost both my Angelic Mandarin and my River Nymph - this put my Dr Blight out front at the end of the round (with his last attack on the DJINN being a miss!!) But - despite my shitty position, I'm actually smiling, as the poison in the next round will knock out both the DJINN and the MERDHAMPIR.

Mid Round 4:

Moving into Round 4 then - when the poison has been applied, and the scavenger has added health onto both Dr Blight's - I find myself in a very good position, from something not so great. From here, this is a standard win - I will hit him for +2 magic and he'll die from poison.

Evaluation - River Nymph

Ok - so here's the deal. Without the RIVER NYMPH, I would have lost.
It's a bold statement, but stay with me - you see, I needed the AMPLIFY in this battle - because what it did was throw additional damage back on my opponent's Dr Blight - and in the end, the magic reflect and the amplify made a +6 health difference by the end of this battle. That's huge, and ultimately, I'm glad to have taken a very good win, despite appearing the underdog at first.

So here's my advice - go buy up RIVER NYMPH while you can, as with her skills - Cleanse, Amplify - and SWIFTNESS at max level, this card is seriously amazing for 4 mana. Get on it!

The amplify definitely looks useful but I wonder if it would be that useful in modern. There is no Lord A so there isn't that many reflect, thorns or return fire.
