Strategy Chat: Pair your Yodin with Lava Spider - SUPER SYNERGY!

There are some combinations which just seem to go together; tomato and cheese, bread and butter, and the other obvious one, Yodin and Lava Spider. In this blog, I want to see their synergy at work.
To do this, let's start with Lava Spider:

On it's surface, this is a pretty average card. For 3 mana, it only has +1 Arrow attack, which is pretty standard, however it does have the +2 speed, which makes it better than most 2 mana archers who only have the 1 speed. Where this card does have a bit more oompf, is with it's 4 health.
This has then led me to check out his upgraded stats. I want to pair Lava Spider with a Level 1 Yodin, and I just seen the value in upgrading my card - to increase both his speed and his health:

To that end, I decided to buy 14 cards to combine this awesome little guy into a far more formidable card, and let's be honest, at only 256 DEC for 14 cards, it was a very, very cheap way to upgrade a card I tend to use fairly often.

The next consideration is how to make this LAVA SPIDER into an even stronger foe, the answer is its synergy with Yodin:

With Yodin's stat advantage, my level 1 LAVA Spider started the battle with +2 Arrows, and he would complete blast damage. The LAVA Spider has the SNIPE ability, this means he'll hit a back-line card, and damage the cards either side of it. That means his hit is actually going to be worth 4 damage. Not too bad for a cheap spider ;)
I went into my battle with this ruleset. It is a good one for Yodin battles, because a lot of archers have low health. This means if I fortify my tank/off-tank position, my opponent should struggle to get to my back line. With 30 mana, I would look to fill up my entire six spots.

For that fortification purpose, I looked to my Chain Golem. How awesome is this card? He is an absolutely rock out the front, and he does a significant amount of damage (which would in turn blast through to the 2nd card). The reason this guy is so tough is because of his SHIELD ability, this means that if he is hit with a melee attack or arrow, he will take reduced damage. Good luck to my opponent if they can't remove my tank!

My Backrow:

Looking at my backrow, you'll note I put the Ooze in the second position. Given my 30 mana constraint, and spending 15 mana on my Summoner and Tank, I needed some cheap filler cards. With the max health rulese though, he becomes a handy blocker with 14 health on him and protects the cards behind him.
I then played the Fire Elemental and Spark Pixies. I went with these cards because of their awesome speed. Playing with the ooze, I had a strong feeling I might get the first few hits in each round. In a normal ruleset, these cards can be squishy and die quick, having either 1 or 2 health only - but here, they became incredibly good cards.
To finish my line-up, I played the cheeky epic card, The Halfing Alchemist. He costs only 2 mana, has a shield, and will destroy my opponents' tank's ability to hurt me. Playing him with Yodin also increases his attack to +2, not bad for a cheap 2 mana card.
Ok, let's have a look at how the battle went:
As you can see, this battle was on from the start. My opponent also picked a Yodin line-up to play - however, he may some really crucial mistakes.
- Of my 6 cards, four of them were focused on my opponents first card. 1 was a snipe, and 1 was there to make up numbers.
- Of my opponents 6 cards, he had 1 focused on my tank, 1 sneaking, and 1 on snipe. This was key to my victory - in a max health rule-set, you need to work on getting down 1 card at a time, otherwise, you'll find you're unable to knock down any cards. This is exactly what happened in this battle, my Chain Golem stood strong, and slowly, I knocked down all of my opponents' 14 health! It was a long battle, but after a couple of hits, the outcome was very clear to see. This was despite my initial worry that his cards were leveled up, and would be hitting with +4 arrow damage each! That's certainly enough with BLAST to take down the majority of teams he would come up against.
So what's the verdict?
- Yodin and LAVA SPIDER are a perfect match, you really need to hunt one down and try it for yourself. This is a pair I've been playing with pretty frequently, and I reckon I'll be continuing to pair 'em up again into the future.
- Regarding the battle and the way it played out, I did think I might have been better playing another card which focused on my opponents' tank - that would have helped significantly - but given his tank played TAUNT, it was probably a non-issue in the end.
- And now my LAVA Spider is Level 3, instead of Level 1, I am already looking ahead at how I will be using him in the future. In truth, I will probably continue to level him up, as I had a Tarsa leveled up, and will be able to play the Spider in Tarsa line-ups. I can see this being a huge advantage, particularly in CHAOS only tournaments and/or in the future when ranked battles split into different formats.

It's definitely a great synergy, well Yodin is a great synergy with any range, and since Lava Spider has Snipe, it just made it even better.
Good luck on your future battles, may the monsters, always be in your favor!

Why if it isn't my old mate @ivarbjorn! I seem to recall calling you 'The Guru' in the Clove discord not too long ago;) - I had all of January off work, and since going back I've been run off my feet, havn't had much of a chance to be in any discords to keep the conversation going with anyone!
I have recently changed my brawl position from Fray 9 (Silver) to Fray 3 (Untamed Novice) and I'm playing more and more with Yodin, and it's funny how the crappy low mana cards really come into their own with him. This lava spider, obviously not an untamed card, but it's one that I probably should buy another 16 cards for and make it level 4. Getting it to a +2 Arrow starting position looks like a good way to continue to rip through the battles.
Thanks for your kind support, as always, Tim.
