The Flying Squid

The Flying Squid is a common, water unit from the Chaos Legion edition. This is a starter card which means that it is available for everyone to use in-game.

There are three key levels for this card that ought to be taken into consideration. First, is level one, as everyone can play the card at this level. At this level, the Flying Squid has a base of two melee attack damage, three-speed, and eight health.

The next important level to consider is level six. At this level, the Flying Squid gains the ability known as Blind to debuff the opposing team. At level six the Flying Squid has a base of three melee attack damage, four-speed, and eight health.

Finally, for those playing at the highest level, it is important to know about the max level stats of this card. As shown in the table above, at max level, the Flying Squid's base stats have maxed out at three melee attack damage, five-speed and ten health. In addition, the Flying Squid has gained the Backfire ability.

The Abilities of the Flying Squid

The Flying Squid has a total of three abilities that it gains while levelling up. The first ability, Reach is gained right from the start at level one. This ability, seen on the left, allows for a melee monster to attack from the second position, regardless of whatever modifiers might be affecting that battle.

Blind, the ability seen in the middle is gained at level six. This ability acts as a debuff to the opposing team by making their melee and ranged units more likely to miss an attack.

Backfire, the ability seen on the right is gained at level ten. This ability works well with Blind, as it causes any monster who misses an attack against the Flying Squid to take two damage.

Example Battle

The above image is a link to the battle for those who wish to watch the battle in its entirety. This was a 21 mana battle with the rule modifier of silenced summoners. For those unfamiliar, this modifier means that summoner abilities are no longer applied to monsters. This battle took place in the bronze league in the modern format. I tried to use cards that everyone would have access to.

Bortus was used in this game simply because he was the cheapest to use mana-wise. This is important as the summoner would not be providing any effects.

The Cruel Sethropod is a cheap front-line unit available to the water splinter. For only costing three mana it has high health and shields which make it excellent at protecting the rest of the team, so long as there is minimal magic damage headed its way.

The Flying Squid took the second slot. With its already high stats and the ability to attack from the second slot, this monster complements Cruel Sethropod quite well allowing for high damage to be dealt to the opposing front line monsters each round.

The Deeplurker occupied the third slot. This monster has high damage with decent other stats for its cost. Having the opportunity ability allows it to target the opponent's lowest health monster and hopefully ensure that the odds are increasing in my favour.

The fourth slot was taken up by the Ice Pixie. This monster fits well here due to its low mana cost and ability to ignore shields when attacking. Having three-speed and flying can also help it to dodge incoming attacks as well. Sadly in this game, it was attacking a monster with void; however, it did serve as a shield so it is not the end of the world.

In the same set of circumstances, I would have likely played the same team; however, I would likely have rotated in some non-starter cards such as Igor Darkspear rather than playing the Ice Pixie.

.

Concluding Remarks

The Flying Squid is a balanced card overall in my opinion. It is capable of attacking from either of the first two slots, and its high health can allow it to act as a second tank in case the first line is defeated.
