[ENG] Reviewing Rebellion's New Abilities: Flank

Hello everyone!

In my last post, I talked briefly about the 4 new skills that will be introduced to the game by the update: Armoured Strike, Corrosive Ward, Flank, and Lookout.

This post is the first in a short series in which I'm going to describe, in detail, how each of these new abilities works, how they can change the gameplay, and suggest some possible combos that will be enabled by them!

Flank Ability

If a monster with the Flank ability is in the first position on your team (i.e. as the main tank), the second monster on your team will gain the Reach ability, allowing that monster to attack even though it's in the second position.

Firstly, let's get to the obvious of how this ability works:

  • Flank only works if the Monster with Flank is in first position;

  • If the second monster on your team is Ranged or Magic, Flank will have no effect, since these creatures can already attack normally from the 2nd position;

  • If your team's second monster is Melee, but it already has the Reach ability, Flank will have no effect;

  • If your team's second monster is Melee, but it already has any other ability that allows a Melee monster to attack out of first position (Sneak, Opportunity), Flank will have no effect;

  • If the match has any Ruleset that allows Melee monsters to attack from outside the first position (Super Sneak, Melee Mayhem, Equal Opportunity), Flank will have no effect.

For the Flank ability to have a positive impact on your team, the second monster on your team must be a Melee monster that doesn't have any of these special abilities. But rest assured, the vast majority of Melee monsters have none of these: according to the Splintercards list, less than 40 monsters have the "Reach" ability, and only 10 are valid in Modern Format.

What's more, these special abilities that allow Melee monsters to attack out of position are highly valued in terms of mana cost: monsters without these abilities are much stronger for the same mana cost, precisely because they have the limitation of only attacking from the first position. Combining them with the Flank ability brings great synergy to the team.

Possible Combos

I understand that the great strength of the Flank ability is to use, in the second position, very Mana-expensive Melee monsters, with high attacks, and without abilities that allow them to attack outside the first position (Sneak, Opportunity, etc.), precisely to "make it worth" to Flank activate his extra attack.

I'm thinking of monsters like: Forgotten One and Grum Flameblade (Fire Splinter), Diemonshark (Water Splinter), Venari Knifer, Grund and Mycelic Infantry (Forest Splinter), Uriel the Purifier (Life Splinter).

Things get even better if this monster, in addition to having a high attack, also has any kind of defensive abilities: as it's in the second position, as soon as your main tank dies, it will take over the tank position. For example, Venari Knifer has the "Thorns" ability, which is great for when it ends up on the 1st position.

No meu último post, eu falei brevemente sobre as 4 novas habilidades que serão introduzidas no jogo pelo update: Armored Strike, Corrosive Ward, Flank, e Lookout.

Essa postagem aqui é a primeira de uma pequena série na qual vou descrever, em detalhes, o funcionamento de cada uma dessas novas habilidades, como elas podem mudar o gameplay do jogo, e sugerir alguns possíveis combos que serão permitidos por elas!

Habilidade Flank

Se um monstro com a habilidade Flank estiver na primeira posição do seu time (ou seja, como tank principal), o segundo monstro do seu time ganhará a habilidade Reach, permitindo que esse segundo monstro ataque mesmo estando na segunda posição.

Primeiro, vamos falar o óbvio sobre o funcionamento dessa habilidade:

  • O Flank só funciona se o Monstro com Flank estiver na primeira posição;

  • Se o segundo monstro do seu time for Ranged ou Magic, o Flank não terá efeito nenhum, visto que essas criaturas já podem atacar normalmente estando na 2a posição;

  • Se o segundo monstro do seu time for Melee, mas ele próprio já tiver a habilidade Reach, o Flank não terá efeito nenhum;

  • Se o segundo monstro do seu time for Melee, mas ele próprio já tiver qualquer outra habilidade que permita um monstro Melee atacar fora da primeira posição (Sneak, Opportunity), o Flank não terá efeito nenhum;

  • Se a partida tiver algum Ruleset que permita com que monstros Melees ataquem fora da primeira posição (Super Sneak, Melee Mayhem, Equal Opportunity), o Flank não terá efeito nenhum.

Para que a habilidade Flank tenha um impacto positivo no seu time, o segundo monstro do seu time deve ser um monstro Melee e que não tenha nenhuma dessas habilidades especiais. Mas fique tranquilo, pois a grande maioria dos monstros Melees não tem nada disso: de acordo com a lista do Splintercards, menos de 40 monstros têm a habilidade "Reach", e só 10 são válidos no Formato Modern.

Além disso, essas habilidades especiais que permitem monstros Melee atacar fora de posição são muito valorizadas em termos de custo de Mana: os monstros sem essas habilidades são muito mais fortes pelo mesmo custo de mana, justamente por terem a limitação de só atacarem na primeira posição. Juntar eles com a habilidade Flank traz uma grande sinergia para o time.

Combos Possíveis

Entendo que a grande força da habilidade Flank é utilizar, na segunda posição, monstros Melees bem caros (em termos de custo de Mana), com ataques altos, e sem habilidades que permitam atacar fora da primeira posição (Sneak, Opportunity, etc.), justamente para "valer a pena" ativar esse ataque extra.

Estou pensando em monstros como: Forgotten One e Grum Flameblade (Splinter de Fogo), Diemonshark (Splinter de Água), Venari Knifer, Grund e Mycelic Infantry (Splinter de Floresta), Uriel the Purifier (Splinter de Vida).

As coisas ficam melhores ainda se esse monstro, além de ter um ataque alto, ainda apresentar habilidades defensivas: como ele está na segunda posição, assim que seu tank principal morrer, ele assumirá a posição de tank. Por exemplo, o Venari Knifer tem a habilidade "Thorns", que é ótima para quando ele for para a 1a posição.
