[ENG] Splinterlands Modern Format: Beyond Untamed and Dice

Hello everyone!

It was recently announced that, for the first time ever, we’ll have the rotation of older editions out of the Modern format, making way for fresh strategies and opportunities. These editions will be replaced by the new Rebellion edition. You can read more about the changes brought by Rebellion on the official blog right here.
The idea of this post is to analyze this rotation on the Modern League, and its impacts on the game economy and gameplay.

Cheaper Cards in the Modern Format

One immediate and noteworthy consequence of the Untamed and Dice editions rotating out of the Modern format is the affordability of cards. With these editions phased out, players will be able to build competitive decks for (way) less money than before. New players will be able to join the Modern format without breaking the bank :D

For instance, the cheapest Epic Monster from Untamed/Dice can be currently obtained for about 50 cents, while the cheapest Epic Chaos Legion card is priced at a mere 14 cents; 3 times cheaper. Legendary cards also follow this suit: the cheapest Chaos Legendary card has prices averaging around 70 cents, while the cheapest Untamed/Dice Legendaries are going for 2.5 dollars.

This shift in card pricing makes it easier for players to experiment with various strategies and deck compositions without the financial barrier that was previously in place.

The End of One-Card Combos

The rotation of Untamed and Dice editions has had a profound impact on the competitive landscape of Splinterlands, particularly with regard to what I like to call “one-card combos”. And we all know what I’m talking about: the infamous combos with Scarred Llama Mage (usually paired with a Monster with auto-heal like Kron the Undying, Flesh Golem or Pelacor Mercenary) or with Yodin Zaku (and his usual gang of Fire Ranged Monsters with Snipe: Lava Spider, Fire Beetle, Ferexia General).

But, now, these combos will no longer be part of the Modern format as both Summoners will be phased out from Modern, reshaping the way players approach their matches. Now, players will need to rely on more complex and multi-card strategies, adding depth and variety to gameplay, and wouldn’t be able to just rent 2 or 3 cards and win 80% of their matches until the Gold League.

The Departure of Byzantine Kitty

The most powerful summoner of the Modern League (and maybe in the whole Splinterlands) is Byzantine Kitty, but it’ll also be phased out of the Modern format.
Known for its potent abilities and game-changing effects, Byzantine Kitty has been a cornerstone of many successful strategies, especially on the higher ranks like Diamond and such. Its departure opens up new opportunities for new summoner selection and encourages players to explore alternative summoner choices.
Bye bye, cute kitty!

Changing the Landscape of Wombo Combos

Untamed and Dice also had several other Summoners who, more often than not, were part of wombos-combos that relied on specific abilities from these sets.
I’m talking about Mylor Crowling (which was virtually unbeatable on Melee-heavy rulesets), Brighton Bloom (perfect for the Earthquake ruleset) and Lorna Shine (Life Sneak Combo). All these will no longer be available in the Modern format, forcing, again, players to adapt and discover new synergies.

I think that the rotation of Untamed and Dice editions from the Modern format will be a nice fresh breeze for the game.
The end of these one-card combos that heavily relied on old Summoners will now be replaced by a more diverse deck composition, and the cheaper cards will make the game more accessible for new players that are usually on a budget.

Are you excited about the new Modern?

[PT-BR] O Formato Modern depois das Edições Untamed e Dice

Fala galera!

O Adeus do Byzantine Kitty
