[ENG] What is the Future of Splinterlands after the Restructure?

Hello everyone!

Less than 24 hours ago, the Splinterlands team announced some less than encouraging news about the future of the game and related projects (Genesis League Sports, Soulkeep, etc.).

In a nutshell, what was said is:

1. The NFT market is going through a much longer downturn than what was expected and, therefore, the current expenditure to develop and maintain the game is not sustainable in the long term;

2. The team will be heavily reduced to cut costs;

3. All Splinterlands side-projects will be transferred to another company, so that the main company can be 100% focused on Splinterlands (and Soulkeep, which is considered an integral part of Splinterlands).

Unfortunately, none of this is unexpected if you've been following the news about the crypto market in general. I myself have recently published several articles and posts saying exactly the same thing: the golden age of NFT games has passed, and will probably never return. We have to adapt to the new reality, in which very few new players will be attracted to the game, and in which projects need to have lower costs.

My opinion on all this is even more discouraging, but I feel obliged to share it.

Splinterlands is a successful project. It's still one of the most played NFT games in the world, it has a relatively recognized name in the crypto world, a successful track record.

Splinterlands should not be abandoned, neither by the devs nor by the gaming community.

On the other hand, I see all the other side projects as big money pits with very little chance of success in 2023. And that doesn't mean that Genesis League or Soulkeep are bad games or that their projects aren't theoretically sustainable and profitable: it means that the world has changed, and that launching an NFT game today, with the current reality, is doomed to failure.

I welcome the fact that the Splinterlands team is adapting to the new reality, cutting costs and thinking long-term. However, I would be even happier if all these smaller projects were abandoned and the effort (and money) was invested exclusively in improving Splinterlands.

Há pouco menos de 24 horas, o time oficial do Splinterlands anunciou notícias pouco animadoras a respeito do futuro do jogo e dos projetos correlatos (Genesis League Sports, Soulkeep, etc.).

De forma resumida, o que foi dito é:

1. O mercado de NFT está passando por um período de baixa muito mais longo que o planejado e, portanto, os gastos atuais para desenvolver e manter o jogo não são sustentáveis no longo prazo,

2. O time será fortemente reduzido para cortar custos,

3. Todos os projetos paralelos ao Splinterlands serão transferidos para outra companhia, de forma que a empresa principal fique 100% focada apenas no Splinterlands (e no Soulkeep, que é considerado como parte integrante do Splinterlands).

Infelizmente, nada disso é inesperado se você vem acompanhando as notícias sobre o mercado de crypto em geral. Eu mesmo, recentemente, publiquei vários artigos e posts falando exatamente a mesma coisa: a época de ouro dos jogos de NFT passou, e provavelmente nunca voltará. Temos que nos adaptar à nova realidade, na qual pouquíssimos jogadores novos serão atraídos para o jogo, e na qual os projetos precisam ter custos menores.

Minha opinião sobre tudo isso é mais desanimadora ainda, porém me sinto na obrigação de compartilhá-la.

O Splinterlands é um projeto de sucesso. Ainda é um dos jogos NFT mais jogados do mundo, tem um nome relativamente reconhecido no mundo crypto, um histórico de sucesso.

O Splinterlands não deve ser abandonado, nem pelos devs nem pela comunidade de jogadores.

Por outro lado, eu vejo todos os outros projetos secundários como grandes dragos de dinheiro com pouquíssimas chances de sucesso em 2023. E isso não quer dizer que o Genesis League ou que o Soulkeep são jogos ruins ou que seus projetos não sejam, teoricamente, sustentáveis e lucrativos: quer dizer que o mundo mudou, e que lançar um jogo NFT hoje, com a realidade atual, é estar fadado ao fracasso.

Vejo com bons olhos que a equipe do Splinterlands esteja se adaptando à nova realidade, cortando gastos e pensando no longo prazo. Porém, eu ficaria ainda mais feliz se todos esses projetos menores fossem abandonados e que o esforço (e o dinheiro) fosse exclusivamente investido para melhorar o Splinterlands.
