Underrated Low Cost Cards

@splinterlands

Hi Guys! I want to preface this by saying number one, I am not giving any financial advice, if you want to invest in these cards that's up to you. Number two, I've only been playing for about a month now and am by no means a professional or amazing player. Number three, these are cards in my opinion that are underrated and passed over for some more expensive cards.

What it is, homie?

So, this is a guide on some cheap cards. Monsters are $1.50 USD or lower. Summoners 10 dollars or lower. I will provide some details on how to use these specific cards and when to use them. The purpose of this guide is to help newer players or players on a budget acquire cards as cheaply as possible to help them climb realistically, up to Mid-Silver. This guide assumes using highest levels possible for bronze. To any players out there with a suggestion or critique please comment your thoughts to help newer players out. Thank you!

Here are the free cards for Water:

Card
Why it's good
When to use it
image.pngObviously Compared to Sabre Shark which has the same cost, the same health, the same everything, this card adds flying. At level 3 speed and health are increased.Use it when the mana supply is low. At level 3 speed gives it a great advantage as being one of the faster cards for water. Use when magic is not available, or if you suspect the other player will use counter magic monsters like in Failed Summoner in Earth splinter. The extra speed can also be helpful against lower health, high damage monsters like Undead Badger.
image.pngA very underrated counter magic card. Very low cost card that is guranteed to survive the first hit thanks to it's shield. A great buffer (or in a tight mana squeeze, tank) in Water splinter. As hinted, use it when the mana is limited, or you want to create a low cost buffer for a ranged or low health, high damage monster. At level 3 he's got a little extra health and a little extra shield, not really worth it in my opinion to level him if you can only use up to level 3 in bronze, he's a good one to keep at level 1.
image.pngThis has decent stats for this splinter at this price range.Use this card when the mana cap is higher. It's another buffer tank with average damage and speed. Still very useful for the cost. It has reach and can thankfully chip through that Living Lava shield. At level 3, extra health and speed always handy.

Here's the free cards for Fire:

Card
Why it's good
When to use it
image.pngThis guy is a good because of his shield shatter ability. The struggle is his slow speed. He can work well as a backline tank because of his extra shield, or even as a tank when the front guy dies under the right rules.I'd recommend leveling him first to get the extra speed. Him being fast is huge to get rid of the armor before the rest of the team attacks. His high cost is a draw back but if the mana pool is very high then he's a good option to have especially against high armor monsters. Keep in mind his speed, and it could be helpful to have him go just before a slow but very hard hitter like Living Lava.
image.pngLook at that one cost! It's beautiful! The one cost is the best thing about this card. You have an extra mana? Having this card lets you fill it. Extra health to throw in and a chance for some cheeky damage. Take a look at those free cards, there is no 1 cost. If you have an extra mana having this card is a free body in there.
image.pngLast stand and high health. It doesn't hurt that he's firing magic damage. He's great where higher health creatures are essential.Gotta be careful because of healing abilities. He doesn't have enough damage to kill off a healer, even at level 2 last stand. Because of that, use care to kill off healers and self healers. He can come in handy after you kill off those monsters.

Here's the free cards for Life:
image.png

Card
Why it's good
When to use it
image.pngVery good card. For one cost more has damage and higher speed than Divine Healer. A steal at this price.Use it whenever you have the mana to use it over Divine Healer. If you've got the extra healing obviously a better option.
image.pngAs you can see, there are no free magic damage users in Life splinter. This is a great option to get some, a low price with 2 magic damage and a boost to health. If you have the mana, this is a good card to use when you want the best of both worlds from Tyrus Paladium and Mother Khala. Not to mention the decent magic damage it offers at 2 speed.
image.pngA well rounded card that can attack from the second positoin for fair amount of damage.I know it's free, but at level 2 it's even better. There's a juicy boost to damage and being 3 speed makes him a cornerstone for Life splinter. The free one's good, but obviously if you can level him to 2 you'll have the advantage.

image.png
Here's the free cards for Earth:
image.png

Card
Why it's good
When to use it
image.pngThis is a good buffer card because of the scavenger. The two ranged damage also isn't bad. This is a very situational card in my opinion. Because he's kind of slow. But I have been in matches where his additional health made him a problem. Also don't underestimate the 2 ranged damage. You can keep him in the back to tank some damage or you can use him as a buffer between other hard hitters.
image.pngHashtag save the bees. A 4 damage with flying and 10 health. Plus it's a fuzzy bee.Level 3 gets her extra speed which as a 4 damage with flying you definitely want. High mana cost but the benefits are there.
image.pngOpportunity at the same mana cost as Goblin Sorcerer. While Sorcerer has Sneak, Screeching Vulture has Opportunity and Flying. Both come in handy to, in my opinion push out the Free Goblin Sorcerer in terms of utility. This is the lowest priced card in Earth that has Opportunity. Very helpful against low health high damage monsters Like Ice Pixie. At level 3 he's got essential extra speed and health.

Here's the free cards for Death:
image.png

Card
Why it's good
When to use it
image.pngVery underrated card. The blast ability is super handy for un-armored enemies. Extremely high speed and health at 8 mana cost. If mana isn't an issue (and sometimes even if it is) Nightmare comes in handy most offten than you think. This is a great card to level to 3. The speed and damage are both increased. If you can get rid of the healers or self healers then he's a great front liner.
image.pngLife Leech is very strong. The magic damage is decent as well. He's another good buffer to protect your squishy cards like Bone Assassin.Because ofhis Life Leech Bonesmith is a very strong defender. He gets extra speed when leveled to 2 which can be handy. If you have extra mana he's a good additional to your lineup.
image.pngDark Ferryman is underrated because you don't see his usefulness until level 2. At level 2 he has cripple which will reduce the max health of monsters. At level two his high health and cripple ability makes him a good back end tank. His cripple ability stacks which can genuinely change the tide against monsters with healing abilities. Even if they can heal, if they're max health falls into killing range it doesn't matter.

Summoners:

This is a tough spot. Your leveled up monsters won't matter if you can't use them and right now summoner costs are the real crutch to having a good deck. There aren't many options out there for summoners under 10 bucks. Let me say though, that a lot of time even if the summoner isn't the best option for the opponent, the leveled up cards can make up for it. So these are the summoners I'd suggest you invest in to help you find an easier path climbing.

image.png

I've included two dragon summoners in this list here. Even though there aren't any free dragon cards. If you don't know, dragon summoners are kind of the neutral monsters of summoners. You can choose a splinter to use and use any dragon cards purchased along with the cards of that splinter. For example, if you selected Brighton Bloom as your summoner, you can then choose Fire splinter as well. So even though you don't have dragon cards or have purchased very few dragon cards, you can still play using dragon summoners in this way. So with that in mind, even though it's a toss up when it comes to how much mana is available, it's probably a good idea to invest in a dragon summoner because of the utility for it. If you don't want to spend a lot of money on different kinds of summoners, here's a way to mitigate the financial cost even just a little.

Additional Cards:

At level 3 this guy gets some extra health and armor. Honestly he's not a bad pick for a tank. Cost is at 8 and the armor is beefy.
Sand Worm is a very good card. Even at the 9 mana cost. If you've got a match with very high mana, you can definitely find a place for 'Sandy' to fit in. Level 1 it's great if you want to level it up, you'll get some extra speed at level 2. Again more speed is more better. But at level 3 it'll get an extra health which isn't terrible but the damage is what people grab him for.
!
I know it's cheeky, but I wanted to sneak in this 2 dollar cost dragon card. Dragon cards are all pretty expensive and it's hard to recommend anything cheaper than this gal. The thorns and armor the high health high damage, all of it is a quadfecta of power. The speed is low, and damage could be higher, but the Thorns makes up for it. The armor is even more beefy than Elvin Defender so the reason she's listed here is obvious. She's an all around better card the only issue though, is that she's dragon. That means you'll need to use a dragon summoner and the cheaper ones cost an extra mana. So Keep that in mind when you budget for which cards to get.
